Abstract
English serves an ever-increasingly important role as a mode of communication in today's globalized modern society, and it is certainly no overstatement to say that English is the true lingua franca of the 21st century. Given this context, the study of the English language carries certain critical importance. As the importance of English language education continues to be underscored, it may be necessary to approach English education with the aim of undertaking it more efficiently, by means of analyzing the best study methods and characteristics employed by successful learners of the language. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to identify and analyze the key factors contributing to success in learning English, by examining the case studies of successful English language learners across a diverse range of backgrounds. Through this research, the English communicative competence and pronunciation of the good language learners has been examined, and how affective, cognitive characteristics, learning strategies and learning environments relate to the language study under question. First, communication and pronunciation tests were undertaken to examine the English language proficiency of good Language learners and how learners' factors relate to good language learner's English fluency For used. The subsequent results showed that most of the successful language learners, the subjects of this research have very high level English language proficiency. In terns of age of language acquisition, there was little correlation with any particular pre-existing hypothesis about the absolute age level. Given cases A through. I, all from differing personal backgrounds, tests results showed that their communication level was high enough to be almost indistinguishable from native speakers. Even when examining the age at which a student arrives in an English-speaking country, it was found that both children who resided abroad before the puberty and after the puberty exhibited very advanced level communicative competence like native speakers. Moreover, even in the case of I who had never resided abroad, his/her test results indicated a communication level that differed minimally from native speakers. And so did C who had resided abroad for about three and a half years and started her English study after the puberty. They both said they have had a very strong interest in English from their childhood. They also said they have had a good environment for getting used to English and it's more important factor than others to be a good English speaker. In terms of pronunciation, it was hound that there was a relationship between the critical period hypothesis like the pre-studies about an age factor of pronunciation. Taking the results from a pronunciation test administered by a native speaker, it was found that cases A, B, and I (all of whom started learning English before puberty) spoke with native fluency, as did cases C and D (both of whom started learning English in the 6th grade, slightly after puberty age). These results showed that experience living in an English-speaking country has effects on students' English pronunciation, since cases A, B, C, and D have all lived in an English-speaking country for at least three years. Of course, given case I who has had no experience living abroad but has excellent pronunciation, the results could be viewed as saying that the age of puberty is more important than experience living abroad in determining speaking fluency. As well, case G also does not have experience living in an English speaking country and first started learning English before puberty age like case I, but given his/her present age of thirteen versus I's age of thirty seven, it may be that this person has not yet had enough time for exposure and training in the English language. Hence, while critical ages by which to start learning English do have some impact, continued exposure to and practice of the language also have strong effects, and these factors should be considered in conjunction with one another. Second, in order to examine the affective aspects of these students, research was conducted on the students' personalities, learning style preferences, and the results showed that these students had differing personalities and study habits rather than one particular paradigm. Nevertheless, in terms of reason for studying, these students generally exhibited interest in the language itself, rather than approaching it from a utilitarian perspective. Also, in terns of personality, they were more prone towards cognitive rather than decision-making processes. In other words, these students showed initiative and a more open attitude by which they adapted to various situations, and exhibited flexibility and adaptiveness rather than partake in a regimented and systematic framework It is interesting to note that they were generally more interested in the process of learning itself, rather than particular outcomes from studying. Moreover, another common characteristic was that these students did not have much sense of insecurity in their study of English, and had particularly high levels of self efficacy. Examining their cognitive aspects, these students fall in the middle category in terms of the "left-side" neurological type, and had greater tendencies toward independent thinking as opposed to dependent cognitive characteristics. This is consistent with research by Naiman et al. (1975) and Brown (1977), both of whom studied the particular characteristics of language learners. Third, inquiry was made into successful English-learning strategies and learning environment and attitude, though a questionnaire and face-to-face interviews with the nine selected persons. To begin, results showed that in terns of learning strategies such as indirect and direct strategies by Oxford(1990). The direct strategies are memory, compensation, cognition and the indirect strategies are meta cognitive, affective and socio-cultural strategies. Most of the subjects of this study have already use s of strategies including indirect and direct strategies. And the results showed that in terms of exposure to comprehensible written and verbal English, these students had consistent exposures for time periods ranging from seven years to a maximum of thirty years. There were diverse methods of exposure, but those persons who did not have experience living abroad often relied on TV viewing, radio, and reading English language newspapers. Also, when determining whether English was used for communicative purposes, all replied positively, and with the exception of case F all used English for at least one hour a day in order to communicate. These students also all replied that they had sufficient self -motivation to pursue language study. Finally, when asked whether they had experience with instruction focused on the form of the language all said yes, and it was interesting to note that all of these students replied that it is more advantageous to build some communicative basis in terms of speaking/listening comprehension before beginning to study gramar and language structure. In the direct interviews, it was noted that all of the research subjects had pride in Korea as a country. They did not feel any cultural inferiority vis-a-vis English-speaking countries but instead felt they were at least equal. They also had very positive views on the cultures of those living in English-speaking countries. As well, they had a strong perspective on their individual study preferences, personality characteristics, intellectual inclinations with study habits consistent with their likes and dislikes, and the learner, I was struck by their will to continuously keep up their language study with view to diligently strengthen specific areas of weakness. The final question sought to specifically examine how successful language learners of this study have learning strategies and learning environments such that they were able to gain proficiency in a country where English is a foreign language. The most prominent characteristics among these subjects was the interest and passion in the English language of the learners themselves. Also, they appeared to have realized that English usage is not strictly mandatory but naturally recognized English as a means of communication. In terms of educational environment, they all benefited from being in environments where they could naturally learn the language. These learners had strong self-confidence and optimistic ways of thinking, and they had outstanding adaptiveness to their environments. It was also interesting to note that they all strongly emphasized the importance of first mastering one's mother tongue before approaching a foreign language. Based on the above-mentioned observations, a framework consisting of factors attributing to successful language study was identified.;오늘날과 같은 국제화 시대에서 영어는 실질적인 세계 공용어로서 중요한 의사소통 수단으로 통용되고 있고, 우리나라에서도 영어 학습에 대한 관심과 열기가 고조되고 있다.
