Facing 21st century, mankind has been faced with the largest change and challenge ever since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Among these factors of change and challenge in this era, the major issues are post-ideology that has closed the age of cold war between the West and the East and the global environments suffering from the ecological destructions. Ecology among these two factors influences to a great extent throughout the entire aspect of politics, economics, and society, and in the meantime, it also requires us direct changes in our living habits, attitudes and method. People's attentions to and interests in ecology that originated from the prospect of the global environmental protection have changed the paradigm of 21st century on "Environmental Friendly" basis meaning "Origin of the Human Spirit." The more human being approach to the highly advanced society, the more they exhibit the tendency of seeking for the intrinsic nature of the human spirits, and in order to recover this humanity, such movements as "Back to the Nature" or "Back to the Basic" appear. The concept of ecologythat appeared due to the problems arising from environment has given a great deal of impact on the sphere of design. Seriousness of environmental contaminations that have been revealed as a grave reality in 21st century evokes people to think that the concept of environmental preservation even in the production of merchandises is very important and it also leads people to a direction that environment friendly materials are to be developed. The processing method of such materials brings about high-tech in a series of manufacturing processes for filament, textile and dye, etc., and also those contents that require for environmental protection and preservation activities constitute the mainstream of technologies. Thus, endeavors for the developments of materials, which have been continuously advancing along with growth of new complex technology, are being driven to various directions in order to reflect the needs of the consumers as it really is. Particularly, materials for the surface of textile express an effect on unique texture, and this suggests that the aesthetic aspect has been added in an affirmative manner to functional dimension in order to evaluate the value of textile along with diversified consumers' needs. The researcher tried to study textile design that is to be established by combining technology and craftsmanship based on the prevailing concept in the current era, called ecology. First, I reviewed the flow of ecology movements that appeared according to the environmental issues arising from this era of ecology and people's attentions to and interests in design field in connection with such issues by dividing it into phenomena of returning to nature, natural design, environment protection and green design. Second, I examined the tendency of ecology and its cases in textile and also textile materials of the ecological concepts. Third, among representative materials of nature friendly fiber, I investigated general characteristics of the felt processing using wool. Fourth, I induced the changes in appearance as a new material through means of Knitted Nuno Felt technique, which is a complex material, based on the understandings and knowledge of felt processing. Fifth, as an expression technique, I used machine embroidery, stitch and tie-dyed, etc. and as design elements, I employed lines and its kinds in order to express the incidental effects. The results obtained by these research activities are as follows: First, natural fiber is not only treated by a small amount of chemicals from cultivation to filament processing but also does not contain any hazardous materials to human body and it is also naturally decomposed when disposed so that it is an ecological material that is not harmful at all to both environment and human being in view of its own natural properties. Second, felt processing is an easy method to adjust to thickness and texture owing to milling process and it shows a variety of the physical properties. Also, it can be said that it is an appropriate processing method for the production of art works specially for that I can achieve delicate features and qualities in expression of craftsmanship through the means of manual working. Third, Knitted Nuno Felt, as a complex material, displays different shrinkage according to alkaline concentration, heats and fraction respectively, and I was able to confirm the changes of textural properties of surface. By using this kind of natural material, it was great that I could present a direction of further development of textile together with its possible features of becoming environment friendly material. To develop environment friendly material that will be required in 21st century, I want to render my service and assistance for further development of textile, which has environment friendly nature and uniqueness and originality, and of which characteristics are pursued by most of the people in this modern age. As a token of such endeavors, here I present my works: 17 items, which were completed by applying Knitted Nuno Felt processing techniques and 3 items of artistic garments.-
