Abstract
The Kum river basin was selected to the sampling site by an analysis of the stream pattern and density of gold and alluvial gold mineral deposits, All samples were collected from the Kum river chanel bar deposits, and modal analysis of the samples were carried out to locate the high potential heavy mineral deposit in the Kum river basin. Heavy minerals were separated by magnetic separator, polarization microscope and X-ray diffractometer. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. An average content of heavy minerals of the surface(1-2m depth) alluvial sediments from the Kum river is 0.3 percent(%), which is gradually decreasing from the upstream to the downstream. 2. The major heavy minerals consist of ilmenite, magnetite, garnet monazite, zircon, epidote, hornblende in minerals and minor ones are apatite, rutile, feldspar, quartz, pyrite, tourmaline, sp-hene, hematite, limonite, ieucoxene, andalusite, sillimanite and cassiterite minerals. 3. In sizing test, the most heavy minerals are highly contained in fine sand (-70#) compared to coarse ones. 4. Of the heavy minerals, the content of ilmenite and garnet minerals decrese, whereas, the content of monazite increases toward the down stream. Magnetite and zircon minerals, however, show irregural distributional patterns in their contents. These indicate that deposition of heavy minerals depend mainly on the stream condition, geomorphic history and the kinds of the source rock from which heavy mineral derived in Kum river basin.
