개화기 샬트르 성 바오로 수녀회의 교육활동에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 개화기 샬트르 성 바오로 수녀회의 교육활동을 당시의 교회사료를 중심으로 한 문헌분석적 방법을 통하여 고찰해 보면서 수녀회가 교회와 한국사회 안에서 어떠한 역할을 수행하였으며 그 의의는 무엇이었는가를 밝혀 보고 한국여성교육사 안에서 차지할 수 있는 올바른 교육사적 위치를 설정해 보는 데에 목적을 두었다. 1888년에 조선에 입국한 샬트르 성 바오로 수녀회는 어린이 교육과 한국인 수녀양성을 통하여 개화기 여성교육에 일익을 담당하였다. 즉, 수녀들은 고아들에게 기초교육과 실업교육을 실시하였고 10 여개의 본당학교에서 여학생들을 가르치면서 여성교육의 보급과 확산에 공헌하였다. 또 수녀회는 한국인 수녀양성교육을 통해 여성들의 각성과 자아실현에 대한 의욕을 고취시켰으며 교육자 내지는 지도자로서의 자질형성에도 도움을 주어 이들로 하여금 교육사업, 의료사업, 사회사업 등의 여러 가지 사회활동에 활발히 참여할 수 있는 기반을 마련해 주었다. 이러한 수녀회의 교육활동은 대부분이 교회 안에서 이루어졌기 때문에 당시 근대화를 향해가던 한국사회에 커다란 기여를 한 것은 아니었지만 초등교육과 여성교육의 저변확산에 이바지하면서 동시에 가난하고 소외된 민중계층들을 위한 헌신적 봉사로써 보다 나은 사회를 구현할 잠재성을 드러내 보였다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.;This study deals with education works by Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres in the Enlightend age of Korea (1888-1910). The method of Study is analyzing about mainly the church literature of those days. This study aims at investigation about Sisters role in the Korean Catholic church and society at that time. And also, it aims to establish the right position of Sisters education works in the history of the modern education of Korean women and to clarify its meaning of educational history. Introduced in Korea in 1888, Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres in Korea played a significant role in the education of women of the open door period through the educations for children and for Korean nuns. The nuns conducted the elementary education and job-training education for orphans and contributed to expanding and generalizing the modern education of women through their education projects for girls in about ten parish church schools. In addition, Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres, for the first time, introduces the Western-style monastic life to Korea and encouraged the women's desire for self-consciousness and self realization. Through the Korean nun training education, it enlightened modern consciousness and gave a great help in building leadership and educatorship through various kinds of modern education programs. But this education works of Sisters could not great contribution to the modernization of Korean Society, because their works was confined within the domain of Catholic church. Even though so, we can find out some historical significance in the Sisters education works. We can say that they contributed, especially through their devotional services for the poor, to spread of elementary and women education by the modern style in Korea.
