Mary Wigman의 舞踊觀

Abstract

現代舞踊의 發展史속에서 단연코 돋보이는 업적을 남긴 사람은 역시 Isadora Duncan이라고 할 수 있다. 그런데 傳統의 굴레를 벗어 던지고 現代舞踊(Modern Dance)이라는 새로운 경지를 개척해 낸 외로운 先驅者였던 Duncan의 뒤를 이어 이 새로운 경지를 확립하여 그 이후의 發展의 礎石을 마련해 준 사람을 꼽으라면 Mary Wigman을 들지 않을 수 없다. Wigman은 Duncan이나 Laban, Dalcroze등의 영향을 받아 舞踊에 관한 풍부한 知識을 얻을 수 있었으나, 그녀가 본격적으로 活動을 시작하면서부터는 그들과는 전혀 다른 獨自的인 길을 걷게 되었다. 즉, Wigman은 Duncan이 강조한 感情的인 衝動인 無我境(ecstasy)에 동조하면서도 더 나아가 여기에 形態(form)라는 요소를 부가하였으며, 舞踊의 音樂으로부터의 解放을 위해 '無音樂의 舞踊'을 시도하였다. 한편, 주위배경을 전혀 고러하지 않았던 Duncan이나 空間을 다분히 知性的인 입장에서 기하학적으로 분석하려고 했던 Laban의 견해를 뛰어넘어 空間을 하나의 媒介體로서 인식하여 空間과의 感情的인 調知를 의도하였다. 이와 함께 Wigman은 종래의 舞踊에서는 타부시했던 '어두움`, '죽음', '괴기성'등의 主題를 도입하였으며, 아무래 기이하고 추하게 보이더라도 영혼을 불러낼 만한 것이면 어떤 動作이라도 받아들임으로써 舞踊의 內容과 形式의 범위를 확대시켰다. 그런데 Wigman의 이러한 業績들이 누구보다도 어려운 外的 環境의 압박속에서 이루어졌다는 사실이 그녀의 偉大性에 빛을 더해주고 있다. 나치政權의 압력과 美國을 위시한 外國의 배타성이라는 二重苦속에서 나온 業績들이라 그 價値를 더욱 높이 살만한 것이다. Wigman의 舞踊觀이 그녀 이후의 現代舞踊에 끼친 영향을 실로 엄청나다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다.;In the developmental history of Modern Dance, Isadora Duncan is the most outstanding person among others contributing to Modern Dance. Duncan was a lonely frontier to open the new realm called “Modern Dance”, who was followed by Mary Wigman establishing the new realm and providing the basis of development. Wigman obtained afflent knowledge about dance from Duncan, Laban and Dalcroze, but the reafter she went her own different from'others. On the one hand Wigman agreed "ecstasy" emphasized by Duncan, and on the other hand added a element called "form" t o "ecstasy". And she also tried "dance without music" to free dance from music. While Duncan moved as a sculptural figure regardless of surroundings and Laban's experiments with space had been largely intellctual, Wigman felt space as the medium through which she moved and intended the emotional combination with space. No movements, however odd or ugly, and no subjects, such as darkness or death, were rejected so long as they were evocative. According to this, the realm of dance repertory was extended. By the way, these contributions of Wigman were performed in spite of plentiful difficulties which anybody had not experienced. Between the Nazi resume and the nationalism of foreigh countries, Wigman only tried to contribute to Modern Dance Conclusionally, Wigman's influence on Modern Dance was great, is greater, and will be greater and greater.
