Off의 의미 분석

Abstract

본 논문의 목적은 불변화사(particle) off속에 흐르는 의미적 공통 속성 즉, off의 기본의미를 규정하며, 이 기본의미에 따라 off의 용법들을 설명해 낼 수 있는가를 입증하려는 데 있다. Off의 용법을 보면, 매우 상이한 많은 의미들을 포함하고 있다. 이것은 이들이 심적 추상화 활동에 의해 생산된 의미 들이기 때문에 겉으로 보기에는 모두 다른 것으로 보인다. 이런 점 때문에, 외국어로서 영어를 배우는 우리는 구절동사(phrasal verb)학습에 어려움을 겪게 되는 것이다. 그러나, 불변화사 off를 단순히 무의미한 기능어(function word)로 취급하지 않고, 자체의 고유의미를 지닌 성분이란 사실만 입증해 보인다면, 그 기본의미에 적용시켜 뜻을 파악해 낼 수 있으므로 보다 효과적인 구절동사 혹은, 관용어 학습을 도모할 수 있으리라 본다. 본 논문에서 밝혀진 off의 기본의미는, 기준이 되는 영역으로부터 그와 관련되 있거나 혹은, 속해 있던 일부 혹은, 전부가 그 위에 붙어있지 않고, 분리되어 떨어져 거리 간격이 생긴 현상을 나타낸다는 것이다. 이 때, 기준으로 삼는 의미영역은 공간적, 시간적 또는 추상적 영역 모두를 망라한다. 아무리 다양한 의미를 나타내는 off용법 들도, 대부분이 그 기본 의미에 의해 설명이 가능한 것으로 연구결과 나타난다. 이와같은 사실은 off가 무의미한 기능어가 아닌, 자체의 기본의미 속성을 지니고 있다는 것을 입증해 줌과 동시에, 종래와 같이 구절동사나 관용어는 무조건 암기 항으로서만 그 학습이 가능하다는 관념에서 벗어나, off의 용법들을 의미적으로 연결해 이들을 체계적으로 학습함으로써 하나의 보다 효과적인 관용어 학습방법을 제시해준다 하겠다.;The phrasal verbs pose one of the most formidable problems of Korean student learning English as a foreign language. The reason is that all the English particles have been dealt with as function words, which have little meaning. The purpose of this thesis is to define a semantic thread (or common semantic feature, basic meaning) that runs through all the seemingly different meaning of "off". The basic meaning of "off" is that a part or whole, which was related (or attached) to a standard domain, is not on and separated from it. The results of a separation indicates distance away from a standard domain. Here the standard domain contains spatial, temporal and abstract relations. It has been shown, in this study, that all the meanings represented by "off" share some semantic feature and that the mental activity of abstraction supports the theoretical basis of it. The conclusion of this study is that variant meanings in usage of "off" can be explained by its basic meaning, that is we can find out some common semantic thread running through all the usages of the particle "off". These facts predict that we can cast off mechanical memorization and systematically learn the phrasal verbs in English by semantic sequence.
