한국 전통매듭 기법을 응용한 의상디자인 연구

Abstract

오늘날 현대사회는 경제, 예술, 문학 등 문화 전반에 걸쳐서 국제화 되어가고 있다. 이러한 현상 속에 현대 복식은 서구 중심적 사고방식에서 벗어나 다원화 및 절충주의를 추구하는 포스트모더니즘의 영향으로 민족적 요소가 부각되는 경향에 있다. 즉, 가장 민족적인 것이 가장 세계적이다 라는 말에서도 알 수 있듯이 낭만주의적 발상에서 벗어나 우리의 디자인이 세계 속에 진출하기 위해서는 우수하고 보편성을 지닌 고유한 디자인 가치를 찾아서 국제 환경과의 균형을 맞춰 발전시키는 일이 시급하다. 이런 시대에 우리가 한국의 존재를 세계 속에 구축하기 위해서는 우리나라만이 가질 수 있는 독창성을 발견하고 그것을 발전시켜 나가야 한다. 따라서 우리의 전통문화와 한국적 미의 요소들에 대한 올바른 이해가 이 시대에 보다 중요하게 요구된다고 할 수 있겠다. 이러한 움직임 속에서 우리 고유의 전통적 이미지를 담아내는 디자인의 창출은 의미 있는 것이라 여긴다. 본 연구에서는 현대인들의 감각적이고 실용적인 요구에 따라 현대 복식 소재의 여러 가지 예술적 표현 방법 중에서 수공예적인 기법인 한국 전통 매듭기법을 복식에 도입하고자 하였다. 즉 전통기법을 현대적으로 해석하여 새로운 디자인과 표현 기법을 창출시킴으로써 의상디자인에 있어서 한국 전통매듭기법의 창의적 표현 가능성을 조명하고 제시하는데 연구의 목적이 있다. 연구방법으로는 사료와 관계문헌 및 선행연구를 참고로 하여 매듭에 관하여 고찰하였다. 특히 매듭의 조형성을 중심으로 분석하였고 한국 전통매듭의 표현기법에 대하여 연구하였다. 이론적 연구를 토대로 전통매듭의 표현기법을 응용하여 8벌의 의상 작품을 디자인 하고, 제작하였다. 첫째, 한국 전통매듭의 역사적 기록들과 재료, 색, 종류, 명칭을 문헌조사를 통해 알아보고 객관적으로 고찰하여 이를 의상디자인에 도입하는데 있어서의 가능성을 알아보았다. 둘째, 한국 전통매듭의 조형성과 상징성을 분석하여 전통미 표현을 위해 현대 복식조형에서는 어떻게 응용되고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 셋째, 현대 의상디자인에 가장 효과적으로 응용 될 수 있는 한국 전통매듭의 기법과 조형성을 선택하여 현대적 감각에 맞게 재구성하였다. 그리고 털실을 이용한 매듭기법을 중심으로 니팅, 패치워크, 비즈워크, 브래이딩 기법을 혼합 사용하여 총 8점의 실물 제작하였다. 본 연구를 통해 얻어진 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국 전통매듭 기법과 다양한 소재기법을 함께 의상디자인 에 도입함으로써 매듭실은 견사로 맺어야 한다는 고정관념에서 벗어나 소재가 지닌 미적 표현의 한계점을 극복 할 수 있었다. 둘째, 매듭 표현재료의 특성에 따라 의상디자인의 표현영역이 무한함을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 수공예적인 기법을 의상디자인에 도입함으로써 기계문명의 발달로 인한 획일화된 의복생산에서 벗어나, 독창적이고 개성 있는 고품격의 의상으로서의 제작이 가능하였다. 넷째, 전통매듭기법을 니팅, 패치워크, 비즈워크, 브래이딩 기법과 혼합하고 여러 가지 소재로 시도함으로써 다채롭고 풍부한 표현 효과를 거둘 수 있어 새로운 소재기법으로서의 무한한 가능성을 알 수 있었다. 다섯째, 전통 매듭기법을 응용해 장식의 단위형태를 구성함으로써 디자인에 따라 자유로운 배열과 구성을 가능하게 했을 뿐 아니라 기존 배열방식에서 벗어나 현대적 감각이 부여될 수 있는 가능성을 줄 수 있었다. 이와 같은 연구의 결과로 볼 때, 한국 전통매듭 기법을 응용한 의상은 조형예술로서 독창적이고 창조적인 경쟁력의 가능성을 가지는 것이다. 다양한 소재와 조형미를 살려 현대적 감각과 기법을 제대로 응용할 수 있다면 무한한 예술적 모티브로서의 표현 가능성을 가지고 있음을 볼 수 있었다. 앞으로 우리나라 패션의 세계화를 위해서는 전통에 대한 체계적인 연구와 분석이 선행된 후에 다양한 시각으로의 접근과 새로운 표현방법을 위한 시도가 지속적으로 이루어져야 할 것이다. 그러므로 본 연구를 통하여 표현기법으로서의 매듭기법이 우리나라의 현대 의상디자인과 예술 의상 분야에서 예술적인 가치를 지닌 영역으로 확대되는 하나의 계기가 되었으면 한다.; In today's modern society, every areas including economy, arts, literature and culture is being globalized. In such circumstances, while the modern costume has lost its own cultural identity of West-centered ruling ideology, many people are being reawakened of our culture, having been affected by the post-modernism pursuing a pluralistic eclecticism departing from the West-centered way of thinking. 'the most nationalistic culture is the culture with which every world can sympathize. Namely, the most nationalistic is the most global. In order to depart from the romantic mentality to advance into the world, our design urgently needs to find our own excellent but universal design values and thereby, strike a harmony with the future environment. In order to have our nation established in the world in such an age, we should explore and develop our own originality. Hence, it is importantly required of us to correctly understand the elements of our traditional culture and aesthetics. In such circumstances, it may be very meaningful to create the designs containing our unique traditional images. Assuming that handicraft techniques are emphasized most among various artistic expressions for modern clothing materials as per modern men's sensuous and pragmatic needs, this study aimed to introduce the knotting techniques of our traditional arts into clothing. Namely, the traditional techniques were reinterpreted in a modern way to create new designs and expression techniques, and thereby, the potential of our traditional but creative knotting techniques was reviewed. To this end, relevant historical data and literature as well as preceding studies were extensively reviewed centering around knotting forms. The specific procedures of this study can be summed as follows; First, the historical records about the Korean traditional knots were reviewed objectively in view of materials, colors, types and terms to explore the possibility of applying them to clothing designs. Second, forms and symbols of the Korean traditional knots were analyzed to determine how they are applied to our modern clothing forms to express the traditional aesthetics. Third, techniques and forms of the Korean traditional knots applicable most effectively to modern clothing design were selected to be reorganized to meet the modern senses. In addition, such techniques centered about knotting of woolen yarns as knitting, patchwork, beadswork and braiding were mixed to produce a total of 8 works. This study can be concluded as follows; First, the Korean traditional knotting techniques and diverse material techniques could be applied to modern clothing designs, and as a result, the researcher could depart from the fixed idea that knotting yarns should be silk and thereby, could surmount the limits of aesthetic expressions inherent in materials. Second, it could be known that expression of clothing design could be almost unlimited if knot expression materials should be appropriated used. Third, if the handicraft techniques should be applied to clothing designs, uniform clothing production using machines would be avoided, and instead, unique and original decent clothing could be designed. Fourth, the traditional knotting techniques could be used being mixed with knitting, patchwork, beadswork and braiding techniques along with various materials only to effect colorful and rich expressions as well as explore the possibility of new material techniques. Fifth, unit forms of decorations could be designed by applying the traditional knotting techniques to test free layouts and organizations of design and at the same time, explore the possibility of creating a modern sense different from the conventional layout. The results of this study suggest that the clothing design applying the Korean traditional knotting techniques would be original and unique enough to be competitive. If modern senses and techniques should be applied with diverse materials and forms, our traditional knotting techniques would be greatly potential as unlimited artistic motifs. Lastly, it is hoped that this study will be followed up by future studies which will systematically analyze our traditional design techniques for new expressions. Then, the knotting techniques tested by this study for their expressive effects would be applied more widely to modern and artistic clothing designs and thus, established as clothing design techniques of artistic values.
