Structures tend to become high-rise, large and specialized due to the urban concentration. Technology related to the structure and construction is required to improve, for which the use of high strength concrete(HSC) with better material property, and composite member with the combined advantage of both concrete and steel for better performance, is suggested. Over a half of fires, which increase by over 10% every year recently, come from the architectural structure, causing a loss at national level. However, little study has been conducted on the member at high temperature despite the increase in the use of HSC composite member. In this study, we designed the composite column with HSC in life size to figure out the change in the temperature of inner section of member through the prior unstressed heating test, depending on the heating hour, and considered the residual strength and behavior in the wake of fire of composite column with HSC on the basis of the axial load and displacement test of actuation experiment following the cooling. The Schmidt Hammer test, a sort of non-destructive test was conducted right after the cooling and 20 days after the cooling to observe the change in the strength, depending on the cooling of heated member. The fire proof board attaching specimen was also conducted to provide the measure for improving the fire resistance of existing building. Following that, we set up an model of composite column with HSC that sets steel ratio, section size, ratio of reinforcement as parameters after verifying the modelling technique through the comparison between the value interpreted by DIANA(Displacement Analyzer), a nonlinear finite element method, and the experimental value, in order to compare the strength and the stiffness of member which is not damaged by fire and the fire-damaged member with a view to reviewing the effect of each parameter on the residual strength in the wake of the fires. We measured the change in the temperature of inner section through the thermocouple, depending on the time, while applying the heat for 30 minutes and 60 minutes based on the ISO 834 standard heating curve for the 7 specimens which are mainly related to heating time, type of loading, the existence of attached fire resistant board. We measured the residual strength through the non-destructive test and actuation experiment of fire-damaged member that went through the curing of concrete for one month via the cooling in the natural stand-by state. As a result of considering the structural behavior of fire-damaged composite column with HSC, we drew the following conclusion. If the HSC column is applied with the heat from outside, the phenomenon of spalling sets in, causing the temperature of inner section to rise fast toward the section loss of cover layer, and the subsequent reduction of the geometrical moment of inertia curtails the load capacity that the member can endure, making it more vulnerable to fire than the general strength column with normal strength concrete. Around 10% of section loss resulted by the spalled which happened at 15th minute out of the 60-minute-long heating time. The spalling area was not regular. The rate of loss was found similar in the 30-minute-long heating time and 60 minute-long heating time as only the first spalling occurred. The temperature of inner section increases in proportion to the depth of section, and the rate of increase soars in the outside. If the spalling happens, the concrete of cover gets exfoliated, which puts the inside more closer to the source of heat as a result, making the rate of increase even greater. The temperature of cover thickness of specimen ranges somewhere between 400℃ and 800℃ when the heating is applied for 60 minutes, but the temperature of inner section reaches around 100℃. The moisture in cover layer of HSC gets into the inside if the surface of member is heated. If the temperature reaches 100℃, the water consumes the energy to convert into vapor, making the temperature rise inside the member gets delayed. If the slope of the curve for load capacity-displacement and strain-strain of specimen which is not heated and the specimen which is reviewed, both the strength and stiffness can be found to be degraded in proportion to the heating time because 30 minutes of heating reduces the residual strength by 46% and 30 minutes of heating reduces the residual strength by 58%. This is because the loss of section, reinforcement exposure and degradation of exposed material's performance due to the spalling. If the degradation of strength estimated through the Schmidt Hammer test is classified, depending on the location of member's section, it is found that the strength of edge is approximately 65% to 75% of the elevation center strength which absorbs the heat on the first side. The degraded strength of fire-damaged member recovered as the cooling time passed by and rate of revery was greater in proportion to the decline in the residual strength of member, which was found in the verification of the recovery of compressive strength based on the strength estimated by the Schmidt Hammer test, depending on the cooling time. The surface concrete temperature of member, which is heated for 60 minutes based on the ISO 834 curve in the prior unstressed state, reaches 950℃. But the temperature of cover 50mm is around 300℃, and temperature of inner section does not reach 500℃, which is the limit of water heat temperature. Therefore, the concrete damaged up to the cover thickness can be removed, repaired and reused. No damage is inflicted to steel and reinforced steel because they do not reach the limit temperature of 500℃, making it possible for them to be reused. The specimen which is attached with fire resistant board was found to have almost same performance as the specimen which were not damaged by th fire at all, implying that attaching the fire resistant board to existing structure would be the effective way of preventing the member residual strength loss that comes from the fire. By using DIANA to review the effect of change in the steel ratio, section size and the steel ratio on the residual strength of composite column with HSC which is exposed to the fire, the conclusion we drew is like this: As the steel ratio or the section size or steel ratio increases with all the other conditions limited, the residual strength ratio(load capacity) or remaining stiffness ratio(load capacity-displacement slope) increases, making it possible to make a member with excellent fire resistance. This is because the concrete area converts into the steel or reinforcement by the increased area of steel ratio or steel, changing the strength and modulus of elasticity. If the temperature of inner section increases to around 500℃ in case of fire, the concrete modulus of elasticity reduces by 50%, while the steel modulus of elasticity remains at 85%, putting the steel less vulnerable to the damage from the high temperature. Moreover, if the section size increases, the concrete mass whose inner section is not damaged by fire increases, implying that increasing the section for the member which has same steel ratio would be effective to prevent the damage from the fire. If it is exposed to the fire for 60 minutes, the temperature of steel or reinforcement does not reach 500℃, which result in no degradation of performance. So, the residual strength increases as the ratio of reinforcement or steel ratio increases. But if the time of exposure increases to 90 minutes, the strength and reinforcement modulus of elasticity of the section(350㎜×350㎜) with the cover thickness of 50㎜ are degraded by as much as 50% to 70% because the temperature reaches 540℃. The reduced mechanic property of reinforcement affects the overall residual strength of the member in case of the temperature increase, making the residual strength to be degraded greatly in proportion to the increase in the reinforcement ratio. Therefore, though the increase in the reinforcement ratio or the steel ratio can be a measure to prevent the degradation of residual strength in the wake of fire if the member temperature of inner section at the reinforcement or steel point does not reach 500℃, much greater residual strength loss can result from the temperature which exceeds 500℃. So, the most ideal dimension of reinforcement and steel must be determined by considering the appropriate fire time and the distribution of temperature of inner section. As the HSC is being applied to a lot of architectural structures and composite members which can improve the performance of member is being used more and more, the study on the fire resistance requires detailed data related to the temperature of inner section and more accurate data about the reduction of the residual strength caused by the change in the property of material. And furthermore, what is related to this has to be studied additionally in the future.-
