dc.description.abstract'KATA' and 'OTA' are the most typical examples of movement verbs which are verbs expressing change of locations. For students learning Korean in English-speaking countries, it is easy to presume that the meaning and the use of 'KATA/OTA' will be similar to 'Go/Come' due to their apparent similarities. Even with compound verbs using 'KATA/OTA', they tend to often come up with awkward sentences as they simply translate their English sentences into Korean. This kind of communication problem will persist if we do not acknowledge a system for the correct use of 'KATA/OTA' and for expressing movements in Korean language. Therefore this essay aims to discover the difference between the definition and use of the movement verbs in English, 'Go/Come', and Korean, 'KATA/OTA', and also compare and regulate lexicalization patterns of movement verbs through practical experiments by examining the actual use by native speakers and learners. Chapter Ⅰ discloses the aim of the research and examines the existing research on the movement verbs 'KATA/OTA' and 'Go/Come', discussions regarding lexicalization patterns of the movement verbs and preceding research on movement verbs conducted on foreign students. Chapter Ⅱ provides theoretical background comparing definitions and conditions of 'KATA/OTA' and 'Go/Come', usability in setting view-points based on Kuno's empathy theory which reveals the use of 'come/go' according to the level of empathy and Fillmore's analysis which constitutes the starting point for discussions regarding movement verbs. Moreover, the extent of the research is not limited to simple movement verbs like 'KATA/OTA' but extends to compound movement verbs in the form of 'V-uh-KATA/OTA' and compared lexicalization patterns of English and Korean movement verbs based on Talmy's theory. Chapter Ⅲ shows research methods such as research subjects, research questionnaire, period and process for collecting data, data analysis. Chapter Ⅳ contains research results and discussions divided into three sections. Firstly it analyses student information, difficulties and differences experienced by students in terms of expressing movement verbs, the status of acknowledgement by students of lessons and textbooks related to movement verbs. Next, it compares and analyses group results of the specific sections relating to movement verbs according to the variables being time, destination and agent. Finally, it examines the students' responses in relation to lexicalization patterns of movement verbs based on characteristics of each type and errors. The conclusion in Chapter V puts various research results together and places in order distribution and aspects of using 'KATA/OTA' and 'come/go' and then analyzes the reason for difference between the native speakers and the learners and describes the values of the study. The difference in the aspects and acknowledgment of movement verbs in English and Korean is caused by the difference in use of movement verbs. Because 'KATA/OTA' and 'Come/Go' have deictic characteristics it is necessary to understand the context of the speech related to speaker and listener, time of speech, place of speech, usability in order to understand the correct meaning. If it is said that the utterance context is the coordinates of speech, setting deictic-center is most important as the meaning of speech varies according to what the deictic-center is for the coordinates of speech. Also Korean and English differ in how they lexicalize the components of motion events. Korean requires the components "Path" of motion events to be expressed by verbs and verbs expressing on "Manner" of movements must be in the form of serialization of 'V-uh KATA/OTA' to express movements to define change in location and not motion. Accordingly, deictic factors of 'KATA/OTA' have difference in meanings not just in simple movement verbs but also compound movement verbs. Research up to date in relation to movement verbs were only focused on revealing the unique characteristics of different languages and remained upon comparisons conducted among Korean students learning English. Therefore, information which shows the system for correct definition and usage of Korean language and the aspects of differences in using movement verbs by native speakers and learners will provide practical assistance to the students learning Korean as a foreign language.;‘가다’와 ‘오다’는 장소의 변화를 수반하는 이동을 표현하는 동사로서 가장 전형적인 이동동사라고 할 수 있다.
