자연사박물관의 전시 내용과 중학교 '환경' 교과의 연계성 조사

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 자연사박물관의 전시 내용과 중학교의 환경교육의 연계성을 조사하는 데 있다. 환경교육에서 현장체험학습의 중요성이 강조되고 환경교육장의 개념이 확대되면서 이제 환경교육은 현장과 체험을 떠나서는 논하기 어렵게 되었다. 연구의 목적을 수행하기 위하여 중학교 ‘환경’ 및 환경 관련 교과의 환경교육 내용을 분석하고 이를 바탕으로 전국 7개 종합 자연사박물관의 전시 내용을 분석하였다. 7개 자연사박물관은 전문 연구 인력 현황, 박물관 운영 주체 및 지역을 안배하여 선정하였다. 자연사박물관이 중학교 환경교육의 내용을 얼마나 구현하고 있는지 알아보기 위함이었다. 이상의 연구 목적에 따라 다음과 같은 연구 문제를 설정하였다. 첫째, 자연사박물관의 전시 내용과 중학교 학교 환경교육의 내용과의 연관성을 분석한다. 둘째, 자연사박물관 안에서 또는 자연사박물관을 통하여 실현할 수 있는 환경교육 및 환경교육의 내용을 분석한다. 셋째, 자연사박물관이 환경교육장으로 활용되기 위하여 갖추어야 할 조건을 분석한다. 본 연구의 결과를 바탕으로 내린 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 자연사박물관의 전시 내용은 중학교 학교 환경교육의 내용 사이에는 연관성이 있었다. 연구 대상인 7개 자연사박물관이 모두 중학교 ‘환경’ 교과 내용을 전시, 설명판(panel), 그림(graphic), 멀티미디어(mutimedia) 등의 형태로 다루고 있었다. 둘째, 자연사박물관 안에서 또는 자연사박물관을 통하여 교육적 효과를 기대할 수 있는 환경교육 주제 및 내용은 다양한 것으로 나타났다. 7개 자연사박물관에서 가장 많이 다루고 있는 높은 주제는 생태계와 인간, 생물종 감소 및 생물다양성, 자연환경에 대한 인간의 영향, 인구 증가와 환경문제 등이었다. 지역 생태계에 대한 내용도 자연사박물관 안에서 또는 자연사박물관을 이용하여 실현할 수 있는 좋은 주제임이 드러났다. 자연사박물관 선진국의 경우, 자연사박물관은 운영 주체에 따라 그 목적이 다소 상이하다. 국립 자연사박물관이 생물다양성을 주(主)목적으로 한다면 지역의 자연사박물관이나 지역 정부에서 운영하는 자연사박물관의 주요 목적은 지역 생태계의 보존과 연구이다. 우리나라도 이와 같은 분업화된 체계가 필요하다고 본다. 셋째, 자연사박물관이 환경교육장으로 적극적으로 활용되기 위해서는 학교교육과의 연계 및 박물관교육의 전문화가 필수적이다. 현재 우리나라는 자연사박물관 및 연구 인력과 학교 및 교사와의 구조적·유기적 연계가 거의 이루어지지 않고 있다. 자연사박물관이 환경교육장으로 적극적으로 활용되기 위해서는 이들 주체 간의 유기적 연계가 무엇보다 필수적이다. 또한 이를 위해서는 자연사박물관 내에서 교육을 전담하는 박물관 교육 전문가가 반드시 필요하다.;This study investigated the relationship between exhibitions in natural history museums and environmental education materials and activities in middle schools. Activities outside the classroom have been emphasized and the concept has grown. Results have shown it is difficult to discuss environmental education without field experience. Environmental education materials and activities in middle school curriculums were analyzed first. The exhibition contents of 7 natural history museums were assessed based on their environmental education materials and activities. The status of expert researchers, the museum operators and the region were considered in choosing the 7 natural history museums. It aimed to assess how natural history museums present environmental education and to what degree. To address the study’s purpose, the following questions were asked ; Do the contents of natural history museums exhibitions complement the environmental education in middle schools? What kind of environmental education programs could be provided inside or outside of natural history museums? What qualifications are needed in order for history museums to be used as a source of environmental education? The results are as follows ; First, some of the natural history museums' exhibitions complement environmental education in middle schools. The methods of presentation were various including displays, panels, multimedia etc. Second, environmental education programs and activities inside and outside of natural history museums are diverse. The most popular subjects are ; the interaction between ecosystems & humans, extinction of species, diversity of ecosystems, the effects of human behavior on nature, and population growth & environmental problems. Results show that ecosystems near natural history museums can be a valuable education resource. Third, natural history museums should be related to school education so they can be used as a source of environmental education. Moreover, museums need experts to take charge of education.
