Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the middle and high school students' level of science-related experience and their attitude toward science, and to identify how the former affects the latter. This study aims to provide significant fundamental data for improvement in teaching-learning process utilizing effective science-related experience. For this purpose, 228 second graders from a middle school and 221 second graders from a high school in Kyunggi area were asked to respond to the survey containing 100 questions, 60 on the level of experience and 40 on the attitude, prepared for this study. The result of the survey was analyzed by 2-way ANOVA and simple correlation analysis with SPSS 12.0 statistics package. The findings of this study and suggestions are as the following: First of all, the level of middle and high school students' science-related experience was found to be relatively low. The experience level of male students was rather higher than female students, and this was proven statistically significant(p< .05). Also, the experience level of high school students was shown to be higher than that of middle school students', but no significant difference could be identified(p> .05). Moreover, those who were preparing to go on to a college of science showed higher level and meaningful difference in science-related experience(p< .05). Second, it was found out that more of the students' science-related experience took place outside the school, mostly in their childhood, and the experience level of scientific events marked the lowest score. It was shown that, generally, male and high school students recorded a relatively higher level. However, female students had more field trip experience(p< .05), and high school students showed significantly higher general science activity's experience level outside of the classroom, and of private tutoring(p< .05). Third, males and middle school students showed more positive attitude toward science than females and high school students(p< .05). Those who were studying to go on to a college of science showed more positive attitude and significant difference(p< .05). Fourth, among the subcategories of the attitude toward science, the respondents were most positive to the attitude toward scientific research, but most negative to utilizing science as a pastime in their free time. More female students replied that they find joy in science class(p< .05). Fifth, it was shown that science-related experiences inside and outside the school are connected with a high level of correlation(p< .01). The high level of correlation could be found among the subcategories under the attitude toward science category(p< .01), and the highest level of correlation was reported between taking joy in science class and the attitude toward the utilization of science as a pastime. Finally, a significant correlation was recognized between the science-related experience and the attitude toward science(p< .01). Furthermore, experience both inside and outside the school showed meaningful correlation with the attitude toward science(p< .01), but experience inside the school has a higher level of correlation . Continuous researches on science-related experience that correlates to the attitude toward science should be implemented. By doing this, we should be able to develop programs that can provide those experiences with students so that more students would be equipped with positive attitude toward science through various science-related experiences.
