Abstract
Traditional culture is an invaluable basis to our contemporary wisdom having developed from generations of experiences. Today we live in a fast moving intense world and often, traditional culture helps remind us of our origin and acts as our strong central pivot. Consequently giving us mental security and comfort. In the traditional society, handmade crafts objects were for daily domestic comfort and convenience. If people wanted craft objects, their idea would be passed on to specialized craft people to be made for them. Therefore, people possessed objects that were aesthetically pleasing and practical. In the contemporary era, we have developed a form of production where objects can be mass-produced. Yet do such industrialized objects satisfy the consumer. The versatility of consumer preferences much be considered in order to detect the level of consumer satisfaction. In crafts there are infinite possibilities and there is a need for specialists today to revise our own inherent traditional culture for new and interesting developments. The subject of the Korean Dokaebi (goblin) has been chosen to be applied in making craft objects which the concept of subjective dreams. Theoretical research was conducted to understand the life style pattern of our ancient ancestors and also to form an insight on how the traditional culture can be applied to today's living environment. In addition to this, the different phenomena of Dokaebi, appearing in our traditional culture, particularly in folk tales and images have been studied in depth. In doing so, it was possible to obtain much information on the Korean Dokaebi. Studies were also conducted on aesthetical formation in order to find a method where the Dokaebi could be expressed positively using other theme objects like embroidered Korean female shoes, iron pot, flail, mask and others. Most of the clay work was made using the coiling and slab-building techniques. For repetition of form, the press-molding method was also used in conjunction to the above. A brown stoneware and celadon clay bodies were used. Colored slips were applied on to three different types of stoneware bodies (including those with white properties) for vividness in color. To retain the brightness of colored slips, a transparent glaze was used. A blue glaze emphasized the fire flame of the Dokaebi and a white glaze was applied for numerous facial expressions of the Dokaebi. Depending on the effect, glazes were applied by brushing and spraying. The clay works were fired in a 0.5 m³ gas kiln for eight hours finishing the firing at a temperature of 850 °c. The second was an oxidation firing and it took nine hours, reaching 1260°c. New information on the Korean traditional culture has been acquired through the study and it provided the opportunity to treasure some of our inherent assets. We often prayed for our aspirations to come true to the Dokaebi - hoping to meet our loved ones, for fortune, etc.. It is evident that they were mental and spiritual strength that sustained people for living their daily lives rather than a fictional animism 1) Soul of the dead. Spirit. 2) In primitive religion, it was considered as being the spirit associated with nature. Spirit of the mountains. 3) Immortal energy that is the origins of all creation. 4) Origins of living strength and life. Soul. . They are a reflection on ourselves, rather than a folk character. The study encouraged the possibility of creating practical objects with the different expressions of the Dokaebi. In a time where globalization is becoming universal, it is important to preserve our inherent qualities to be shared with the rest of the world. Furthermore, it is important to respect and value our traditional culture for continued research and study on our craft objects.
