Salutations and greeting expressions need to be emphasized since they play a pivotal role in maintaining friendly relations with the people we encounter. If the goal of Korean Language Education is helping language learners achieve effective communication by using natural and setting-specific Korean expressions, then at the threshold of that goal is the teaching of greeting gestures and greeting expressions. But the Korean expressions found in Korean Language Education are at best limited expressions rigged under limited circumstances. It is difficult to say that Korean Language Education offers language learners sufficient materials to learn accurate Korean greeting expressions in diverse discourse contexts. This study investigated various forms of greeting expressions used by native Korean speakers in order to seek and gather adequate, basic materials to develop Korean Language Education. Using questionnaires, I focused on native Korean speakers and their individual greeting expressions used in informal settings, and examined the data collected. The layout of this paper is as follows: Chapter Ⅰ accounts for the need for and purpose of research on Korean greeting expressions and the scope of the research. First, I examined the preceding studies and the direction of those studies by looking at the studies conducted on salutations within Korean Language Education, in Korean Language Education for foreigners, in Japanese Language Education. After the assessment, the need for research about Korean greeting expressions was reaffirmed. Chapter Ⅱ categorizes concepts and functions of salutations and classifies the types of existing expressions. In light of the set categories, I selected various greeting settings ideal for this study with minor adaptations where needed. In Chapter Ⅲ I gave a closer and more detailed look at the actual methods of examination and their procedures and analysis of Korean greeting expressions. The questionnaires given to 100 subjects both male and female between the ages of 20 and 40 consist of 9 different situations divided into the time of meeting and the time of departure. Except when they first meet, each of the 9 situations was further divided according to the "status" of interlocutors: close elder and not-so-close elder; close acquaintance of same age and not-so-close acquaintance; close "junior(underling)" and not-close junior. The utterances were then divided into findings of "the 1st utterance" and "the 2nd utterance". If there were no 2nd utterances from the person being greeted... if the salutation just ended with one person greeting another, then the result was categorized as 1st utterances. If there were 2nd utterances, then such greeting expressions were categorized as 1st and 2nd utterances. The findings from the "dialogues" between two subjects were accounted for and analyzed in their frequency of alternations; this isolating the most frequency used expressions in the discourse. Chapter Ⅳ recorded the types of greetings used in meetings and departures and the analysis of the results. Meeting was divided into 5 different types: meet for the first time; meet routinely; meet multiple times; meet coincidentally; and meet someone who one has not seen in ages. Departure was divided into 3 types: routine departure; leaving earlier than others; having not seen for a long time after the last departure. The 3rd type of departure was further divided into two with one situation where the person who receives the farewell leaves early and another where the person who offers the farewell leaves earlier than the other party. The most frequently used expressions were accounted for and analyzed. The results found from the analysis of greeting expressions used in each setting yielded the following characteristics of Korean greeting expressions: First, the Korean greeting expressions used towards the elderly were generally the same regardless of the relationship between the interlocutors since Korean are influenced by a culture that shows high regards toward elderly persons. Therefore, we can conclude that Korean generally use the same expressions as long as it is not seriously contrary to the "norm" of etiquette. Second, Korean greeting expressions have many direct and personal questioning types of greetings; this tendency comes from the characteristic of native Korean speakers to be curious about the affairs of others and, from this curiosity, the "direct" form of expressions tend to be used more commonly. Third, the result indicated that Korean greeting expressions are used irrespective of gender. Even though the structure or form are not distinctively different, the results found in 1st and 2nd utterances indicated subtle differences in the kinds of expression used according to gender. Fourth, Korean greeting expressions used consist of both formal greetings and diverse greetings that have certain nuances of affection embedded in them to make the other parties feel "close". And the closer one is to the other party, the tendency for Korean to use formal greeting was high. With not-so-close parties, some showed the use of "ambiguous" greetings or "formulaic" expressions such as "See you next time...", "I'll call you...", and "Let's get together sometime...". Also, according to relative degree of intimacy, the quantity of "the 2nd utterance" was quite high. In Chapter Ⅴ, I propose a number of applicable methods viable for Korean Language Education based on the results of this study. I also reviewed the learning materials of Korean language used in 3 different institutions and examined their existing problems and issues pertaining to the teaching of appropriate Korean greeting expressions. I also considered combining Korean greeting expressions with culture education against the backdrop of Korean Language Education. This study researched and analyzed various forms of Korean greeting expressions appropriate for Korean language learners to learn and successfully use in diverse discourse settings. The significance of this study is two-fold: 1) It provides a sound basis of evidence for curriculum designers to consider and 2) the study carefully and meticulously divides the results according to degree of relationship and "rank" in society; it is not just a study assessing greeting expression included in Korean language texts.;인사 및 인사 표현은 상대방과 우호적 관계를 유지하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다는 점에서 강조되어야 할 부분이다.
