Abstract
The inclusion of children with disabilities in programs with their typical developing peers is one of many changes that has occurred in the field of early childhood special education. Inclusion was initially viewed as a placement issues, but it has become clear that for inclusion to be successful, children should not just be placed in an inclusive setting but should be involved with their peers in ongoing classroom activities and routines. They also should have opportunities for learning new skills within the context of those activities and routines. For this to occur, we need instructional approaches that promote children's learning in the context of activities and routines with their peers. This study investigated the effects of naturalistic strategies on increasing levels of active engagement of center time activities in inclusive setting. A multiple-probe design was used with three children with developmental delays and three early childhood teachers. The teacher training was conducted for 5 sessions. The teachers had not been trained for any Activity-Based Naturalistic Intervention before. All interventions occurred in the context of ongoing child-selected play activities in inclusive classroom. The rate of naturalistic teaching behavior and engagement of children were observed in baseline and experimental conditions occurred during 10-minutes sessions in which all children were free to select different center. This study imply that Activity-Based Naturalistic Intervention training is effective in teaching behaviors and engagement of children with special needs in inclusive classroom. The results from this study were summarized as followed: 1. The Activity-Based Naturalistic Intervention demonstrated the effects in teaching behaviors. The percentage of naturalistic teaching behaviors of all participants was increased. 2. The effect of the Activity-Based Naturalistic Intervention on teaching behaviors was generalized to other children with special needs in the same class. 3. The percentage of engagement of all children was changed to their peers from the toys. 4. The intervention increased the rate of participation to the ongoing-class routines. Results showed that the intervention strategies were effective in increasing the level of active engagement in child-selected play activities. 5. The effect of the Activity-Based Naturalistic Intervention was maintained after the intervention. These findings suggest that the important ingredients in successful application of systematic instructional procedures in inclusive classroom may be related to how proficient teachers are at recognizing and organizing instructional trials for the children with special needs. The effectiveness of the naturalistic intervention and the applications of the naturalistic to the other ongoing routines in preschool are also discussed.
