조각보를 중심으로 본 전통 보자기 미의 현대적 재해석 연구

Abstract

우리의 문화는 수천 년에 걸쳐 생성, 변모, 확대를 거듭해 오면서 그 전통을 계승, 발전시켜 왔다. 우리 전통은 매우 다양하지만 그 전통의 창조적 계승에 대한 노력은 부족한 실정이며 이미 서구화된 사고방식에 물들어있는 신세대적인 생활 방식은 우리의 문화를 제대로 바라보기조차 힘든 상황에 놓여 있다. 문화는 지키고 보존하는 그 자체에도 목적이 있는 것이 아니라 새롭게 전통을 창조하고 계승하여 우리의 정체성을 찾고 우리 고유의 문화 특성을 올바르게 인식하는 것이다. 전통이란 민족생활 양식의 역사적 발전을 바탕으로 형성된 정신을 통한 형식의 표현, 조형성 및 기법을 토대로 민족의 양식을 세우고 계승한 것이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 조선 후기 자연주의사상을 바탕으로 한 자연스럽고 작위적이지 않은 화려하면서도 소박한 미적 감각을 자랑하는 당시 여성들의 미의식과 정서가 담긴 조각보를 전통의 모티브로 선택하였다. 조선시대의 일상생활의 필수품인 조각보는 한국인의 고유한 생활양식과 전통적 미의식이 잘 나타나 있으며 오늘날 민족 고유의 특성을 살린 전통 주제로서 새롭게 인식되고 있다. 또한 우리 정서의 진정한 아름다움이 스스로 묻어나오는 소중한 깨달음을 얻을 수 있으며 우리 문화의 품격에서 풍부한 상상력과 구성력 그리고 옛것의 순박성과 무기교의 기교를 배울 수 있다. 본인은 자투리 천을 이용하여 탄생된 조각보의 개념과 발생배경 그리고 조각보 안에서 보이는 색과 면의 조형적 특징을 작품을 통해 현대감각에 맞게 재구성함으로써 전통의 계승과 창조의 새로운 가능성을 발견하고 우리 미의식의 핵심을 조각보에서 찾아 현 시대적인 특성에 맞게 작품을 제작해 봄으로써 새로운 가능성과 앞으로의 작품방향을 모색해보고자 한다. 본문에서는 작품제작의 바탕이 된 한국인의 미의식인 자연주의사상과 보자기의 의미와 발달배경을 연구하고 조각보의 색채와 조형성을 분석하고, 또한 조각보에서 영향을 받은 색채와 조형적 이미지를 기학학적인 형태 중 사각형의 조합과 변형을 통하여 공간의 다양한 변화를 모색하고 그에 따른 구조적인 미를 표현하고자 하였다. 세계화속에서 우리의 고유성을 회복하기 위한 문화의식과 조형의식의 바탕위에서 전통에 대한 올바른 자각과 선별적 수용, 이를 바탕으로 한 새로운 전통의 재창조는 끊임없이 연구되어야 할 과제이다. 전통을 무조건 배척하는 것이 아니라 참된 이해와 재해석으로 현대적인 미감으로 조화롭게 발전시켜 우리의 미에 대한 정체성 확립과 실용성에 기본 목표를 두어 문화의 고유가치가 세계문화권에서 인정받을 수 있는 보편적 가능성이 있음을 밝히고 더 나아가 우리의 미에 대한 정체성 확립과 그에 대한 연구발전이 시급함을 인식토록 함에 그 의의를 둔다.;Through thousands of years our culture has been inherited and developed experiencing the cycles of generation, transfiguration and expansion. Even though our tradition is characterized with diversity, the endeavor to inherit the tradition in a creative way is still much to be desired. The life-style of the new generation, which had been accustomed to the Western way of thinking, makes it hard to understand our culture in the right way. Culture is not something to be just protected and maintained. It has its meaning when we create and inherit the tradition anew to find our identity and to understand the characteristics of our culture in the right way. The tradition is the expression of the soul formed on the basis of historical development in the lifestyle of people. It is also something that sets up and succeeds the way of life in the nation (based on moldability and techniques). In this study, based on the naturalism of the second half of Choson, Jogagbo (조각보) that contains the sense of beauty and the emotion of the women in Choson who take pride in naturalism and simplicity, was chose as a motive. The Jogagbo, the necessities of life in Choson period, reveals the characteristic lifestyle and traditional aesthetics of the Korean people and is understood anew as a traditional subject that characterizes the tradition of today. Also it makes us realize the essential beauty and importance of our emotion. Our culture teaches us the vigorous imagination, the simplicity of the old and the non-technical technique Through the works of Jogagbo and from the viewpoint of modern sense, I have reconstructed the concept, the background of origin, and the characteristics of the line, area and the construction of Jogagbo, which had been created from a scrap of cloth. Trying to inherit the tradition, to find the possibility of a new creation and to find the essence of our sense of beauty in Jogagbo, we produced the works in line with the characteristics of today. Based those endeavors we hope to find a new possibility and the direction of the works in the future. In the main text, the naturalism, or the sense of beauty in Korean people, which constitutes production of the works, and the meaning and the background of development of Bojagi were studied. The analysis of the tint and construction of Jogagbo was carried out. We have tried to vary the colors and the structural images applied from Jogagbo based on combination and modification of rectangles among many geometrical shapes. We have also tried to express the structural beauty based on those geometrical variations. Through such cultural and molding awareness, the research regarding the re-creation of a new tradition based on true understanding and selective acceptance of the traditions should be continued in order to restore our tradition among the globalization. The importance lies not in unconditional exclusion of traditions, but in developing them into modern beauty through true understanding and reanalysis. It is important to make known that our traditions may be recognized in the global cultural system through practicality and establishing identity toward beauty. It is also important to have people recognized that establishing identity with regard to our sense of beauty and the need for further development in this area is urgent.
