Title: A quality assessment of Korean-English patent machine translation Automatic and human evaluations of K2E-PAT, Patent Translate and WIPO Translate translations A quality assessment of Korean-English patent machine translation
Ewha Authors: 이지은; 최효은
Abstract: This paper aims to investigate the quality Korean-English patent translations by three machine translation (MT) engines based on automatic and human evaluations of Korean to English Patent Automatic Translation (K2E-PAT), a pattern-based statistical MT; and Patent Translate and WIPO Translate, both neural MTs. For title translations, WIPO Translate scored the highest in automatic and human evaluations, while results were mixed for the other two MTs. K2E-PAT slightly outperformed Patent Translate in automatic evaluation, whereas Patent Translate outperformed K2E-PAT in human evaluation. For abstract translations, Patent Translate scored the highest in automatic evaluation, followed by WIPO Translate and K2E-PAT. In human evaluation, the ranking order was the same as that of title translations, with WIPO Translate scoring the highest on average. The results indicated correlations between automatic and human evaluations, and the NMTs subject to the current study still do not render satisfactory gist translation from Korean to English. © 2023 John Benjamins Publishing Company.

Title: 한중 번역의 테마 및 테마 전개방식 선택 연구
Ewha Authors:
The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of themes and theme development methods in Korean and Chinese texts respectively and to
analyze themes and variations in theme development methods that appear when translating Korean into Chinese, so as to derive implications for selecting themes and theme development methods when practicing Korean-Chinese translation. In the process of translation, translators make numerous choices. The
starting point is the Moonduin theme. This theme functions as an emphasis as the head of the section and has the textual function of providing a foundation
for the subsequent part. Outside the section, it also functions as a text and reveals the style through the re-use of the preceding section. As such, the
theme and the theme development method have a textual function and can convey the author's intention and therefore it is very important to select the
theme. However, in the actual translation field, there is a lack of awareness of the importance of themes and theme development methods. There are often
cases in which unnatural translations are generated or the author's intentions are not well conveyed because the translator simply considered the theme as part of the section and did not properly select it. Furthermore, even when the translator recognizes the importance of the theme and the theme development method, if the translator has insufficent knowledge of the linguistic conventions related to the theme of the starting word and the arriving word, the translator may make
a choice that does not meet the language conventions of the starting word or overlooks the intention of the starting word text. In particular, in the case of
language pairs that coexist with syntactic norms and linguistic conventions such as Korean and Chinese, it is easy to fall into a maze of choices. Therefore,
research is needed to derive implications to guide theme selection and theme development methods in Korean-Chinese translation. To this end, there is a need
for a study on the characteristics of themes and theme development methods in Korean and Chinese texts and an analysis of theme selection in translated
Chinese texts. Therefore, this study attempted to find answers to the following four research questions. First, what are the distribution characteristics of themes and theme development methods in Korean and Chinese? Second, what are the themes and the types of thematic development methods that showed statistically significant changes in texts translated from Korean to Chinese? Third, what are the aspects and causes of theme variation that appeared when translating Korean into Chinese? Fourth, what are the characteristics and implications of theme selection that appear when translating Korean into Chinese? In order to answer these four research questions, this study analyzed novels using a hybrid research method that mobilized both quantitative and qualitative
analysis. Novels were targeted for analysis because of their characteristics of themes and theme development methods, the validity of observing translation patterns, and the accessibility of the text. Unlike texts with more fixed forms such as legal texts, novels show various themes and development methods. This
is a necessary feature for this study to observe the distribution characteristics of themes and theme development methods. In addition, in novels, the author
conveys intentions through themes and theme development methods and represents various styles, which makes it difficult to select the preservation and
transformation of themes during translation. Therefore, meaningful results can be derived for translation practice and translation research by analyzing aspects of theme selection and theme development methods through the review of translated novels. In addition, there has been active publication of Chinese
translated novels in recent years as Chinese translations of Korean novels have gained popularity in China. In this situation, we expected that it would be easy
to secure novels as analysis texts and that it would be valuable to contribute to the research on the translation of Korean-Chinese novels. Therefore, novels
were chosen as the analysis genre of this study. As research methods, both quantitative research and text analysis were used. Quantitative analysis is
required to confirm the distribution characteristics of the theme and the theme development method and to identify items that show statistically significant
changes when comparing the translated text (TT) with the original text (ST) and the non-translated text (NT) while text analysis is required to observe the theme
selection pattern in detail. In order to find answers to research questions with these analysis targets and research methods, a theoretical consideration was first conducted on the basis of the research, that is, the theme and theme development method. In this stage, we examined the theme and the operational definition of the theme and theme development method, the type of theme and theme development method, and the theme translation in Korean and Chinese. Based on the thematic theory of systematic functional linguistics, a theme was defined as having an essential literacy and making a textual contribution to the context in the operational definition. We chose the thematic theory centered on the phylum of systematic functional linguistics because the target languages
of this study, Korean and Chinese, are SVO and SOV languages, respectively, to which the theory can be applied. It is also suitable for quantitative analysis of
this study because the phylum is more objective than other arguments that consider the Gujeongboseong or the epic woman as an essential characteristic of
the theme. Therefore, the theme theory of systematic functional linguistics was applied to categorize themes into topical themes, textual themes, and
interpersonal themes according to meta-function. This is the primary theme type, and in order to confirm the more detailed distribution, we divided the topical
themes according to the components into participant themes, situational elements themes, and motion themselves, and divided the textual themes into time,
addition, cause, and half semantic relationships, and the interpersonal themes into modal adverbs, exclamations, and arcs. The theme development method was based on Danes' theory, but was defined by grafting previous studies such as analysis units of the theme theory of systematic functional linguistics. The theme development method was achieved through the re-use of the preceding section, and can be divided into continuous type, single linear type, cross type, rema concentrated type, mixed type, and gap type. Condensation devices for re-administration include repetition, rewriting, pronouns, omission, specification, part-whole, part-part, and derivative. Based on the above themes and the concept of theme development method, we examined the themes and theme development methods of Korean and Chinese and set the analysis criteria. The basic theme setting principles were as follows: first, when a topical theme comes out, the remaining part is REM, and second, textual and interpersonal themes must precede the topical theme. The topical theme in Korean is related to the location of “eun/eun.” When there is no “eun/eun” the component located in front of the participant or situational element becomes the topical theme, but when there is “eun/eun,” if “eun/eun“ plays a role in introducing a topic rather than emphasizing through contrast, the participant and situational element can constitute a topical theme by forming a complex theme. In this way, the theme setting in Korean is influenced by the survey. In contrast, the topical theme in Chinese is mainly set through meaning and function. Situational element themes are elements that provide an environmental context for the process such as time and place at the
beginning of the sentence, and participant themes usually become the subject or object at the beginning of the sentence, but if the subject is in small sentences,
it is considered that there is no theme. In addition, there are detailed setting criteria, but the most important judgment factor is also the operational definition
of the theme, that is, the head of the sentence and the textual function. In other words, when it is difficult to apply with general setting criteria, it judges
what the theme is based on the operational definition of the theme. The criteria for judging the theme development method are simpler than the theme. The
type can be judged according to the location where re-employment occurs. However, when re-employment appeared more than once, re-employment of the
theme was used as the priority criterion for judgment. In order to find the answer to each research question, themes and remas were classified for the selected novel text, and themes and theme development methods were coded by type and then analyzed. The distribution characteristics were derived for the first research question by checking the number of themes and theme development methods by type of selected Korean text (ST) and non-translated Chinese text (NT). The number of themes and theme development methods for each type shown in the translated text (TT) of the selected Korean text was analyzed using statistical methods such as analysis of variance, and compared with ST and NT to identify the themes and theme development method types that showed significant changes in TT. For the third research question, TT and ST were compared to analyze the variation pattern and cause, focusing on the themes with significant changes derived from the second research question and the type of theme development method. For the fourth research question, the theme variation characteristics were summarized through the analysis of the third research question, and then implications of theme selection were derived by combining them with the results of the first research question.
The research results obtained through this analysis were as follows. For the first research question regarding the distribution characteristics of themes and theme development methods in Korean and Chinese, the analysis found both similarities and differences. First, in the theme distribution, the frequency was high in the order of topical themes, textual themes, and interpersonal themes, and the continuous type was the highest in the theme development method distribution. The difference was that there were more themes realized with clauses such as arthroplasty and adverb clauses in Korean than in Chinese, and there were more ways to develop themes with improper gaps in adjacent sections in Korean. For the second research question, it was demonstrated that the theme and
theme development method items that showed statistically significant changes in the Chinese translated text are theme types and sustainable theme development methods, such as textual themes, interpersonal themes, situational element themes, and articulation participant themes. In addition, significant changes were found when the theme was realized as an antonym, cause, and additional adverbs in the textual theme, and when the theme was realized as a modal adverb in the interpersonal theme. In the theme development method, significant changes were found in the skip condensation device to achieve the theme development. The aspects and causes of theme variation in the Korean-Chinese translation, explored through the third research question, can be divided into mandatory and selective variations. Mandatory variations are caused by syntactic differences between Korean and Chinese. Selective variations appear even though themes and theme development methods can be preserved, and there are translation aspects such as normalization, simplification, and specification. As for the normativeization, a theme or theme development method suitable for the arriving word is selected rather than the starting word, and an untargeted word
order is preferred. Simplification includes aspects in which themes realized through clauses are translated into simpler types of themes such as nouns.
Explanation mainly appeared to strengthen the cohesiveness between sections.
Most of these aspects can be seen as the translator's choice for the realization of readability. In addition, undesirable patterns were observed, such as the
disappearance of re-employment of adjacent sections due to variations in themes or theme development methods, or the failure to sufficiently convey the author's intentions. The answer to the fourth research question was obtained based on the theme selection characteristics identified through the third research question. First, we organized the situations in which compulsory variation is required by theme type, and presented the implications. In addition, by organizing situations in which selective variation is required, this study suggested selection strategies such as simplification, standardization, and clarification. Finally, we also emphasized that caution should be taken when selecting a theme, underscoring that it is necessary to simultaneously implement the readability of the arriving text and the delivery of the original author's intention. To this end, we recommend a method of selecting a plan without impairing fluency and
identifying cases where there is a special intention in the original text. In addition, care should be taken not to reduce cohesiveness due to theme
variation. This study provided implications for selecting themes and theme development methods by analyzing the distribution characteristics of themes and theme development methods in Korean and Chinese texts, as well as the selection patterns and causes of themes in Korean-Chinese translation through quantitative and qualitative research, with a focus on themes and theme development methods. The findings of this study can contribute to the methodology of
studying Korean-Chinese translation in terms of themes and can provide practical assistance in Korean-Chinese translation. However, some limitations of this study are that it targeted one genre of fiction and analyzed only items with significant changes and failed to analyze the texts of a wider variety of writers and
translators. Despite these limitations, as an attempt to study Korean-Chinese translation in terms of themes, this study was meaningful in that each type of theme and theme development method was set, and the characteristics of translation and the causes of variation were considered. It is expected that the results derived from this study can be used to understand the characteristics of themes that appear in Korean-Chinese translation and to establish a theme translation
strategy in the practice of Korean-Chinese translation.

;Cao Xueqin's "Hong Lou Meng" written in the late 1750s is deserved to be called a pioneer among modern Chinese novels as it broke away from the traditional narrative centered around heroes, described various personalities of characters and their daily life in detail and showed dramatic storylines. Literature depicts lives through stories and classics include history and lessons. "Hong Lou Meng" popularized for centuries, faithfully represents the culture and era of the Qing Dynasty in China so readers can glimpse into nobility’s lifestyles in Qing Dynasty, including their attire, cuisine, and everyday objects. Moreover, it is recognized as one of China's Four Great Classical Novels along with "Journey to the West", "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" and "Water Margin". This study examines two modern Korean translations of poetry in "Hong Lou Meng" by combining descriptive analysis and corpus analysis from the perspective of translation aesthetics. As the source text corpus, 233 poems were collected from the novel's 120 chapters and two translation corpora was made from one Korean version translated by jointly Choi Yongchul and Go Minhee of Nanam publisher and the other version translated by Hong Sanghun of Sol Publisher. Through quantitative analysis, two Korean versions are compared, and the first 80 chapters and the last 40 chapters were also done in vocabulary, word usage, and translation styles. With the two translations’ corpus, type/token ratio (TTR), standardized type/token ratio (STTR), sentence length, high-frequency vocabulary, keywords, and word class distribution were analyzed with WordSmith Tools 7.0. According to the results, Nanam's translation is more concise, retaining all original punctuation while Sol's translation exhibits higher vocabulary diversity and omits punctuation more frequently. In addition, the comparison with the source text corpus confirms the significant influence of the original text's vocabulary on the translations. Images from word embedding show similar vocabulary distribution within each translator's work for the first 80 and the last 40 chapters, ensuring fidelity to the original. However, when considering the entire 120 chapters, changes in translation style become evident, particularly when involving more than one translator. Additionally, in the distribution of high-frequency vocabulary, the single translator from Sol produces a more tightly clustered translation than the two translators from Nanam, indicating greater consistency in vocabulary usage by a single translator. This affirms that, in poetry translation, individual translation styles and strategies as well as the original text impact the final translation. The study conducts qualitative analysis applying translation aesthetics. In Liu Miqing's translation aesthetics, translation refers to the aesthetic subject's process of aesthetically representing the aesthetic object. The analysis involves examining the aesthetic subject first and analyzing the artistic features of "Hong Lou Meng" poetry through formal and informal systems contained in the aesthetic object. Evaluation is conducted at the phonetic, lexical, and syntactic levels, as well as emotional states, imagery, and artistic conception, as important elements in Chinese aesthetics. Both poetry translation versions followed fidelity. Moreover, it was encouraging that enhancing a translator's subjective agency can improve the quality of translation although the aesthetic subject of translation is constrained by the aesthetic object.

Title: 경제∙경영서 번역장에 대한 연구
Ewha Authors:
;This study aims to enhance the understanding of translation as a social practice and ultimately improve the social visibility of translators by carrying out three-phase analyses on three cases of translators engaging in the field of business books and thus exploring the existence and functioning of the social space where business book translation takes place.
In the Korean publishing market, business books have been regarded and treated as a separate genre since around the early 2000s. Hit drastically by the Asian financial crisis in the late 1990s, and other subsequent and less-serious crises, the demand for business books has risen sharply. The sales of business books surpassed literature genre for the first time in 2021. Despite the popularity and the high proportion of translated books in the Korean publishing market, business books and their translators have received little, if not no, attention from Korea’s translation scholars whose primary interest has long been in literature genre and the translated texts themselves rather than other genres and the social context in which translation is practiced. It is only recently that the research focus began shifting from the texts into what’s outside the texts. Too often, however, those studies fail to see the holistic picture of translation as a social practice, ending up with a limited focus, i.e., using translators’ notes only instead of the whole paratexts, looking at either the texts or the social context instead of both, etc. What’s also evident in domestic literature, however, is the underrepresentation of field theory by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu which has been pursued most extensively by international translation scholars. Against the backdrop, this study aims to contribute to broadening the horizon of domestic literature on book translation and translation sociology by tracing the social trajectories of three business book translators (translator A, B, and C) from the perspective of Bourdieu’s field theory and the key concepts put forward by the theory such as habitus, field, capital, hexis, and illusio. For this, the study employed triangulation methodology to cross-validate the results and ensure the reliability and stability of the research findings. Beginning with a preliminary analysis–a ¬mini literature review–on the current shape of the Korean book translation field that is a parent field of the field in question, the main part of analysis consisted of three parts: qualitative coding on paratexts; qualitative analysis on one-on-one interviews; and hexis analysis that includes both move analysis on translators’ notes, and quantitative and qualitative corpus analysis on published translations. All of the data were designed to explore what strategies the research participants employed to acquire capital in the field, how they interacted with the structure and the agents in the field, and how their linguistic products actually reflected what they said about their hexis–the linguistic part of habitus. Based on the findings, this study brought to the fore two ultimate questions. How is Korea’s business book translation field working? Does Korea’s business book translation field constitute a “field” in Bourdieu’s term?
Through the above research methods, this study yielded the following results regarding the field of business book translation.
First, the preliminary analysis on existing literature revealed that the field was directly influenced by events such as economic crises in the economic field, one of the parent fields to the field studied. It was also discovered that the emergence of the business book translation field had been triggered by the Asian financial crisis in two ways. In the wake of the crisis, Korea signed on the IMF rescue package that came with then-unfamiliar Western economic ideas and systems, namely, restructuring, more flexible labor policies, neoliberalism and globalization. First, many large corporations, including those in the financial sector, underwent restructuring and laid off their employees. There was some high-quality labor force with domain knowledge and corporate experience that came to enter the book translation field, and translator B and C were among those. Second, although the sudden influx of Western economic ideologies pushed up the demand for relevant knowledge, Korea then had no sufficient pool of authors who could cater to such demand. It was only natural for business book translators to play a crucial role in Korea’s reception of Western ideologies. With the rise in demand for business book translation, publishers began to favor translators with a degree in business administration to those without one. This was how translator A made a debut as a book translator. Another important finding is that the publishing field, to which the field in question belongs, prioritized commercial success over anything else.
Secondly, based on the preliminary findings, the paratexts of the three participants were collected, classified, and coded according to the Bourdieusian framework. The first round of findings was then vigorously cross-verified with one-on-one interview results. It was found that although the three translators followed different processes of capital accumulation through their translation practices in the field studied, they deployed one common strategy¬¬¬¬: the accumulation of objectified cultural capital in two forms–translated books, and paratexts. It was true that each of the three translators entered the field with a different amount and kind of embodied cultural capital–all with a business administration degree, but only B and C with abundant corporate and business experience. Their strategical move to build symbolic capital was found to be starkly different as well: Translator A concentrated on objectified cultural capital–mainly social media, while B started his own translation agency and educational institution to secure social capital and C put much effort to translate renowned books in his attempt to bring to this field the symbolic capital embedded in the original work and the author.
Those findings led to an important implication. The previous work of each translator was considered important credentials. Therefore, translators tried to build their reputation in the field by translating books they considered significant. However, because publishers that prioritize commercial success want to mobilize as much symbolic capital as they can muster from the original author, the original book, the proofreader, or the translator. It is not rare for them to invite a celebrity for endorsement. This could be, at least partly, why translators strategically accumulated various paratexts by writing books, giving lectures, appearing on broadcasts, engaging in social media activities, and doing whatever it takes to publicize themselves.
Thirdly, the analysis on paratexts and one-one-one interviews also revealed how three translators interacted with the social structure and other entities in the field: It was found that each translator adjusted their stance flexibly with regard to whether to resist or accept norms of the field depending on the degree of capital they accumulated, and the expected reactions from the counterparties of their social interactions.
It was also observed that the common process of cultural capital accumulation pursued by the three translators was a result of various interactions. In the business book translation field, celebrity endorsements are generally preferred over translators’ notes. But the interaction with that norm varied across translators: B who is a translation agency CEO acting as an intermediary between publishers and translators and A who usually finds translation work from A’s agency instead of directly from clients were more receptive to the practice without much disagreement. This however is not the case for translator C. Despite his expertise in business, he initially accepted the norm upon entering the field, but later strongly demanded publishers or editors to include his translators’ notes as he acquired symbolic capital little by little in the field. Notably, translator A who was often not invited to write translator’s notes was found to actively utilize the translator biography to express his voice as a translator.
Also found in this part of analysis was the implicit assumption shared by all three translators, in other words, illusio–a common belief that a good translator is someone who translates good business books. It is according to the illusio that they appeared to struggle in order to translate the books they desired. In the early stages when none of the three translators had established themselves as translators, they had passively received translation requests from agencies or publishers and had little say about what to translate. But as they gained recognition in the field, translator A started bidding on translation work, while B established his own agency to freely choose books to translate. It was also in that stage when translator C began looking for publishers that would allow him to translate books of his choice, while also proposing a publicity plan with celebrity endorsement based on his social capital in the field studied. What is noteworthy is his social capital became effective only after he had proved his translation skills in the field.
Fourth, according to the hexis analysis which was divided into two parts––a move analysis on a total of 58 translators’ notes, and a corpus analysis on the 595,897-token samples from the first chapters of 60 original works and 60 translated books, three translators showed different levels of source orientation. Their tendency was partly consistent with the results from paratexts analysis and interviews. Two translators (A and B) appeared to regard source texts as so important that they tried to write mostly about source texts in translators’ notes and to maintain the structure and form of source texts in their translation. By contrast, translator C stressed the importance of incorporating the translator's voice in the translator's notes, and shifting the form and structure of source by splitting or rearranging sentences, and deleting or adding information if necessary for the sake of enhanced readability in the target culture. The corpus analysis found that C’s translations showed a higher frequency of shifts such as deletion, sentence splitting, and domestication strategies, while A and B adopted foreignization and addition strategies with their overall frequency of shifts statistically lower than C. In the case of translator's notes, the moves related to translation or the translator's voice appeared rarely in B's notes, while they accounted for 31% in C's. It was found that their different hexis was related to their translator training. According to C, his tendency to prioritize the target language was influenced by the book he read for self-learning translation skills. Translator A learned source-oriented translation during his enrollment in a Master’s degree translation program. Presumably, the foreignization tendency shown in the translations of A and B could be shaped by the social setting of the field that saw a massive, abrupt influx of Western economic theories and ideologies in the wave of neoliberal globalization.
In aggregate, the field of business book translation is a social arena where translators with expertise in business vie for more latitude to choose books they desire to translate based on their translation skills. Such struggles occur because translators practicing in the field share common illusio that translating good books leads to success as a translator.
Then, can we say that the field of business book translation in Korea is a space of struggle over the appropriation of capital as defined by Bourdieu? Even in the sociology of translation literature which considers translation as a social practice, there are quite a few studies questioning the existence of translation field, citing translation’s peripheral and non-institutional aspects, and lack of clear entry barriers. However, this study argues that the field of business book translation does constitute a field in Bourdieu’s term, as it is an autonomous arena where agents with domain knowledge share common illusio and struggle for symbolic capital and power to choose books they want to translate based on the field’s unique interest–translation skills.
This study is a sociological translation study that tracks down the life trajectories of three individual translators for exploring the existence and functioning of the business book translation field. It holds significance in terms of its subject and analytical methodology as follows.
First, the study adopted systematic triangulation combining a quantitative and qualitative analysis on translation texts and translators’ notes as well as the social context and background in which these texts are produced with detailed description on analysis techniques and procedures. By presenting a research model that can be applied to translators in various fields, it can contribute to filling the quantitative and qualitative gaps in existing literature and broadening the horizons of Korea’s sociological translation research.
Furthermore, this study provides rich data that can be of practical help to translation pedagogy in two aspects. Firstly, by presenting in detail the career trajectories of translators from entry into the high-demand field of business book translation to gaining recognition as a translator in the field, it can provide practical assistance not only to translation learners who want to enter this field but also to instructors who desire to shape relevant courses with more real practice cases. Secondly, by providing concrete examples of translation strategies utilized in actual translations with the cultural and social contexts that led to the selection of these strategies, it can be used as valuable material in translator training.
Lastly, this study placed translators at its center, ultimately contributing to enhancing the social visibility of translators and expanding the perception that translation is a significant social practice. It is hoped that the research model presented in this study will lead to further research on various translation fields and translators.
