The future society is explained by the characteristics of volatiltity, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity(Fadel, Bialik & Trilling, 2015). The government, academia, the Ministry of Education(Agency), parents, and students should all work together to build a new education model in order to nurture talents who can flexibly respond to and adapt to the future society(Boram Lee and Kangi Lee, 2021).
The purpose of this study is to develop a program that can help Korean parents with a high educational zeal(Lee Jong-gak, 2014) to help their children prepare for the changing future society, evaluate the program after application, and It is to analyze the effect and serve as a priming water for related research. Parents, as lifelong learners, need to have the opportunity to relearn their children's education as learners(Kwak Sam-geun, 2005) to help their children's education, and to learn for a learning experience suitable for their children. Even if the types of mathematics learning activities desired by children and the types of mathematics learning activities performed by parents are identical, the results of the study show different responses in terms of content and satisfaction(Kang Mi-sun and Lee Jong-hee, 2019). This indicates the need for parental education. The Covid-19 pandemic moved the field of learning to the home due to distancing, and the need to strengthen parents' capabilities emerged as parents may become their children's homeroom teachers at home. Parents who were not prepared for these social changes in recent years have become more dependent on private tutoring according to their family's economic level.
For this purpose, this study aims to develop a program to help parents' learning involvement in learning to help strengthen parents' capacity to be involved in their children's learning. For the evaluation of the developed program, we apply the program to the subjects of qualitative research, analyze the evaluation opinions of the developed program, and conduct case studies for effect analysis. To this end, research questions were set up as follows.
Research Question 1. What is the Math Learning Involvement Program to help parents who want to be involved in fractional learning for their elementary school children?
Research question 2. What is the characteristic of the parent's preferred type for the mathematics learning involvement program and the parent's participation in the preferred type?
In order to set the direction of research with these research problems and solve the research problems, the five-step process of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation is conducted according to the ADDIE model. A program to help students learn mathematics was developed, and the developed program was evaluated by participants in qualitative research and the effects of the program were analyzed.
In order to solve research question 1, a literature review was conducted at the stage of analysis(A) to prepare a theoretical basis, and a survey of 75 elementary school parents and an interview with 2 parents of elementary school students were conducted to determine the degree of content demand for the program. investigated. In the design(D) stage, a preliminary program draft was constructed based on the contents derived from literature research and demand survey. In the development(D) stage, after conducting a preliminary program for three elementary school parents, interviews were conducted to derive implications and reflect them in the final draft, and the final program was derived through consultation with experts. For case study analysis, the effect of the program was analyzed in the progress stage of recognition–intervention– conflict-regulation-growth, the fifth stage of the learning-intervention process proposed by Kim Hee-jung(2018). The types of encouragement shown by parents who participated in the Encouragement and Trust Program were analyzed as the types of teacher encouragement in the classroom suggested by Na Mi-sun(2011). Based on the first stage of the theoretical model of learning involvement process by Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler(2005), the effects of the program on individual variables that affect math learning involvement derived from previous studies were analyzed.
The main research result of research question 1 is to develop programs into 5 types of mathematics learning activities based on the research of Kang Mi-seon(2015), and 3 sub-content elements for each type were selected from the results of the survey for content selection. To materialize each sub-content, it was implemented based on literature research, and class design and teaching and learning activities were planned. As a result of analyzing the demand for participation method, parents preferred a method in which they could participate individually at the available time, and based on the high response rate that it would be better to participate in only the classes of interest among the programs, individual education and participation in the preferred program for this program were selected. After determining the operation method and making a PPT video about the common educational content for the homogeneity of education for the participants, sending it online, individual training was conducted by phone and zoom.
The main research result of research question 2 was the results of in-depth interview and utterance analysis of 8 parents who participated in the qualitative research, and the preference for encouragement and trust type was high. It was analyzed that conflicts appeared due to lack of expertise in mathematics subject content, lack of confidence in teaching ability, and children's growth. It was found that the creation of experiential learning environment felt burdensome in terms of how to utilize it and the need to spend time. After participating in the program, 7 out of 8 participants said that they were involved in the type of encouragement and trust in the time they were involved with their children. Among them, the effect of the program was analyzed for 4 cases. The effect of the program in the course of learning engagement in mathematics was analyzed as being expressed at the stage of conflict(C)-control(A) among the five stages of recognition(R)-intervention(I)-conflict(C)-control(A). In all four cases, the types of encouragement and trust were applied in activities involving children, and as a result of analyzing the encouragement used in the process(Na Mi-yeon, 2011), various types of encouragement were found in each case. The first stage of Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler's(2005) theoretical model of learning involvement process is explained by the parent's individual variables. In this study, these individual variables were derived as mathematical content knowledge(K), mathematical teaching efficacy(E), mathematical attitude(A), time and energy(T) elements based on the literature in accordance with mathematical learning participation. The developed program had a positive effect on all four variables in the case of three parents, and had a positive effect on three variables in the case of one parent. The positive effect on these individual variables led to an improvement in the results of the children's follow-up activity sheets.
The main conclusions of this study based on these results are as follows. First, this study attempted to develop a program to help children participate in math learning. In the process, it was found that the demand for content selection was very high(96% of the respondents answered that it was necessary) for a parent education program that could help parents in teaching their children mathematics. Parents who participated in the demand survey showed interest in learning method research, management and conversation, encouragement and trust, experiential learning environment creation, and direct guidance as the types of participation in mathematics learning for their children. On the other hand, parents who participated in the developed program showed a high participation rate for encouragement and trust during engagement activities with their children. This may be the result of the variable that referred to the type desired by the child after knowing the results of the test on the type of participation in mathematics learning of the child and the parent themselves while participating in the study. Second, as a result of reflecting the opinion that it would be nice if parents could efficiently relearn the core concept of the mathematics unit proposed in the interview survey for program content selection as common content to all types, the parents who participated in the developed program Re-learning of the core concepts of the subject was recognized as strengthening knowledge of mathematics content(K), and this led to an improvement in parent teaching efficacy, which was analyzed by utterance. Third, participants in this study chose an encouragement and trust program when they were actually involved. In this process, parents said that they were able to get closer to the encouragement and trust that their children wanted by participating in the developed program. Encouragement appeared in various forms in each case, which indicates that the method of support and encouragement can vary depending on the child's disposition and parent-child relationship.Fourth, parents who participated in the study thought they could engage in learning with some past experience in elementary mathematics, but they tended to be angry rather than discovering and acknowledging themselves for not understanding mathematics subjects with systematic and continuous conceptual characteristics. In the end, it was said that this phenomenon had a bad effect on the relationship with their children, and it was during the 4th and 5th grade of elementary school that they felt the limitations of direct guidance in mathematics and depended on private tutoring. Fifth, among the individual variables that affect the process of involvement in mathematics learning, the increase in mathematics content knowledge led to parents' belief in teaching ability, resulting in an improvement in mathematics teaching efficacy.
This study is significant in that it developed an educational program for parents who had been relatively negligent while concentrating mainly on research targeting students and teachers, although they had been acutely aware of the need in the field of mathematics education. Nowadays, parents tend to be more active and professional in their involvement in their children's learning than before. This desire led to the demand for parent education programs, but research and development were insufficient. At this point, it is hoped that the analysis of programs and effects developed by this study will serve as meaningful basic data for related research in the future, and research on math education programs for parents as adult learners will continue from the perspective of lifelong learning for parents.2024-01-01T00:00:00Z경제 수학 교과목에 대한 수학 교사의 교수 실행 연구박민영https://dspace.ewha.ac.kr/handle/2015.oak/2656422023-08-23T16:31:16Z2023-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: 경제 수학 교과목에 대한 수학 교사의 교수 실행 연구
Ewha Authors:
Economic mathematics was newly established as a career choice subject in the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum. From the teacher's point of view, teaching implementation of a new subject refers to a series of processes in which subjects such as economics mathematics settle in the school. For the stable establishment and efficient operation of the new educational system, an in-depth understanding of the actual changes that math teachers may experience in the school and the degree of teachers' perception and acceptance of educational changes is essential. In particular, when a curriculum is newly established or the contents of an existing curriculum are reorganized according to the revision of the curriculum, the process of predicting and preparing for the curriculum is an important process before the curriculum is implemented in the school. Therefore, in order to find out whether economic mathematics, a new subject in the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum, is being implemented well in the school, attention should be paid to the teaching implementation of math teachers with experience in economic mathematics. At this time, in that the subject of teaching implementaion is a teacher, actual implementaion can vary depending on the teacher's perception and teaching implementaion intention, so research on teaching implementaion can start with identifying teachers' perceptions and needs.
Teaching implementaion in the school is an important research topic in improving the curriculum. Teaching implementaion can be seen as the educational behavior of teachers who are the subject of professors in the school. In teaching implementaion, teachers' leading decisions, plans, and practices are emphasized, while in teaching implementaion predictions, predictions of teacher behavior and confirmation of the direction of curriculum implementation are emphasized. Since teaching implementaion is a complex social and cultural space in itself, all of the various factors surrounding the teacher who is the subject of teaching implementaion should be considered. Therefore, beyond teachers' aim to express their expertise in class and realize class goals, it is necessary to comprehensively examine the factors related to teaching implementaion that are having a flexible and complex impact.
According to previous studies, teachers' attitudes, environmental contexts, and self-efficacy toward curriculum implementation are the main factors affecting curriculum implementation. In order to understand the reality of various curriculum implementation, it is necessary to interpret the intention of the curriculum, pay attention to the will and role of teachers who implement it in the school, and to study the three factors affecting curriculum implementation.
Meanwhile, Ajzen(1991) said that human socio-cultural behavior can be predicted through three variables: individual attitude toward a specific behavior, subjective norm, and perceived behavior control, which developed into the Theory of planned behavior. In the theory of planned behavior, behavioral intention is a direct factor in determining behavior, and attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control affect behavioral intention. The theory of planned behavior is effective and useful in explaining human behavior in various fields and in predicting behavioral intentions and behaviors. At this time, confirming the relationship between the components of the theory of planned behavior and the factors that affect teaching implementaion can suggest that the theory of planned behavior is applicable to exploring and predicting math teachers' economic mathematics teaching implementaion. There is still a lack of prior domestic research that deals in-depth with teachers' perceptions and economic mathematics teaching implementaion. Therefore, in order to see if economic mathematics is well established in the school, it is necessary to study the intention of the teacher, who is the subject of teaching and implementaion from the teacher's point of view, and related factors. In addition, it is required to explore the direction of new teaching implementaion research by empirically analyzing economic mathematics teaching implementaion from a teacher's point of view, teaching implementaion intention, and related factors. Therefore, in this study, the following research problems were established.
1. What is the structural relationship between economic mathematics teaching implementaion and the factors influencing teaching implementaion?
2. What is the teacher’s perception of the factors influencing teaching implementation in economics mathematics teaching implementation?
A research model was set up to explain economic mathematics teaching implementaion to answer research questions, and data was collected from 177 high school mathematics teachers by establishing a tool to measure attitudes, environmental constraints, teaching efficacy, and teaching implementaion intentions. Through the collected data, the validity of the measurement tool, the suitability of the research model, and the effect between factors were analyzed according to the confirmatory factor analysis and the structural equation model method. In addition, a focus group interview was conducted with 12 high school mathematics teachers with experience in economic mathematics, and mathematics teachers' perceptions of economic mathematics teaching implementaion were derived to investigate the overall implementaion of economic mathematics teaching. For case studies, we analyzed perceptions extracted from math teachers and examined various causes and contexts that affect the perceptions commonly formed by math teachers. In addition, the results of quantitative research were explored in depth.
As a result of the study, first, it was confirmed that the element that explains the behavior of mathematics teachers, such as the implementaion of economic mathematics teaching, could correspond to three variables of the theory of planned behavior, and that the theory of planned behavior was suitable as a conceptual basis for predicting the intention to economic mathematics teaching implementaion. Second, it was verified that the model of this study, consisting of attitude toward teaching implementaion, environmental constraints, teaching efficacy, and teaching implementaion intention, met the suitability criteria, and through comparison between path coefficients, it was derived that attitude, environmental constraints, and teaching efficacy directly positively affect teaching implementaion intention. At this time, it was confirmed that attitudes toward teaching implementaion had the highest influence on teaching implementaion intention among the three factors, and the influence on teaching implementaion intention was in the order of attitudes toward teaching implementaion (.80), teaching efficacy (.11), and environmental constraints (.09). Third, the most important factor in determining the overall teaching implementaion is the teacher's perception of teaching implementaion. Mathematics teachers' perception of economic mathematics teaching implementaion was closely related to teaching implementaion intention, which can explain that attitudes toward teaching implementaion, environmental constraints, and teaching efficacy are factors that affect teaching implementaion.
The conclusions and implications accordingly are as follows. First, in the structural relationship between economic mathematics teaching implementaion and influencing factors, attitudes, environmental constraints, and teaching efficacy can explain math teachers' economic mathematics teaching implementaion. If the three factors are not met or work negatively, the teaching implementaion intention weakens, which negatively affects the teaching implementaion intention of economic mathematics, and if the three factors work positively, the teaching implementaion intention is strengthened. Second, it was confirmed that as the degree of attitude, environmental constraints, and teaching efficacy increased, the teaching implementaion intention increased, and it was found that the attitude toward teaching implementation had the greatest direct influence on the teaching implementaion intention. Environmental constraints and teaching efficacy had a relatively weak effect on teaching implementaion intention, but since they had a static effect on teaching implementaion intention, they need to be continuously studied as variables that affect teaching implementaion intention. Third, the curriculum should be a design of how school education should be implemented and at the same time a prediction of the implementation of how it should be implemented. As the 2015 revised math curriculum is fully implemented, it is necessary to find constraints that do not properly implement the curriculum intention and give implications for the next curriculum revision. Fourth, when a new subject is established according to the revision of the curriculum, it is necessary to closely examine the actual teaching implementation of teachers. It is necessary to analyze teachers' teaching implementation in depth to find out whether practical and substantial operations are being carried out in line with the curriculum's intentions, and if not, consider alternatives along with reasons for only superficial operations. Fifth, in order to increase the teacher's teaching implementaion intention, the teacher should recognize the value of the subject and have a positive perception of guiding the subject, and in the course of instructional design, it should be possible to engage in teaching implementaion. At the school level, institutional support and environment for teachers' teaching implementaion should be established. Even if a teacher encounters a change in teaching implementaion in the school, if all educational subjects are concerned and prepared in terms of the above three factors, the teaching implementaion intention can be increased, which can lead to smooth teaching implementation.
This study attempted to understand and predict the economics mathematics teaching implementaion and the teaching implementaion intention, and to confirm the direction of teaching implementation. Based on this, I would like to make some suggestions for follow-up research. First, this study demonstrates a model that predicts the behavior of economic mathematics teaching implementation, so if the teaching implementation model is applied to other subjects in the same way in the future, it can be supported to form a systematic theory-based research tool. Second, it is suggested that follow-up research should be conducted by developing questionnaire that can specifically measure potential variables that can affect teaching implementation, such as teaching career and teacher learning opportunities. In addition, if additional variables are set in addition to the three variables that affect behavioral intention in future teaching implementation studies to confirm and verify the effect, meaningful implications for establishing a teaching implementation plan and developing support strategies can be derived.2023-01-01T00:00:00Z디지털 스토리텔링 수학 수업이 중학교 2학년 학생들의 의사소통 능력, 문제해결 능력, 정의적 태도에 미치는 영향성현정https://dspace.ewha.ac.kr/handle/2015.oak/2655852023-08-23T16:31:07Z2023-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: 디지털 스토리텔링 수학 수업이 중학교 2학년 학생들의 의사소통 능력, 문제해결 능력, 정의적 태도에 미치는 영향

With the advancement of digital technology, we have become accustomed to using digital devices such as tablets and smartphones in our daily lives. Along with these changes, there is a need for transformation in the field of education as well. In the revised curriculum of 2022, emphasis was placed on conducting classes that allow students to acquire digital literacy. Students were provided with "D-벗" (a combination of "digital" and "벗") to promote the use of digital tools in the classroom for learning.
In the revised mathematics curriculum of 2022, it emphasized the inclusion of communication skills and problem-solving abilities as key competencies. This is because in the future society, various issues arise that require perspectives from multiple angles. The curriculum aimed to promote the ability to communicate with others and solve problems by utilizing knowledge from various fields.
In addition to adapting well to a digitally-based society and enhancing problem-solving and communication skills, it is also important to address students' attitudinal aspects towards mathematics. According to the results of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study 2019 (TIMSS 2019), Korean 8th-grade students' attitudinal disposition towards mathematics ranked lowest among participating countries. The attitudinal domain serves as a driving force for sustained learning and is an essential element for utilizing mathematical knowledge (Korea Educational Development Institute, 2015). Therefore, in the revised mathematics curriculum of 2022, there was an emphasis on strengthening the interest and relevance of mathematics in students' daily lives, as well as enhancing their perception of its usefulness and fostering their curiosity and engagement.
In line with this, there is a demand for classes that enhance communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and attitudinal disposition while integrating digital technology and education. This study aims to propose a digital storytelling mathematics class.
In this study, we define digital storytelling mathematics class as "class activities that utilize multimedia to support learners in creating and sharing stories related to mathematical principles and concepts." Digital storytelling is a way of transitioning storytelling into the 21st century by leveraging digital technology. It is characterized by openness and shareability, allowing for interactive storytelling using digital devices (HRD Glossary, 2010). By applying digital storytelling in mathematics classes, it not only provides opportunities to enhance collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills (Niemi, H., & Multisilta, J., 2016) but also has a positive impact on reducing math anxiety (Nabilah, 2021) and improving confidence in understanding mathematical content (Niemi et al., 2021).
However, previous research on digital storytelling mathematics classes has conducted fragmented analyses on the positive effects of such classes. Therefore, in this study, we aim to conduct a mixed-method research to comprehensively analyze the impact of digital storytelling mathematics classes on communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and attitudinal disposition.
Furthermore, the flexible semester system, which is designed to foster the capacities of adolescents, is only introduced until the first year of middle school (Ministry of Education, 2015). As a result, starting from the second year of middle school, traditional lecture-style classes are predominantly conducted rather than active learning classes. However, according to Nabilah (2021), as educational levels increase, the solutions to problems become more complex, leading to the development of math anxiety. Moreover, according to the international comparison results of TIMSS 2019, Korean 8th-grade students' attitudinal disposition towards mathematics ranked lowest among participating countries.
Therefore, this study aimed to comprehensively investigate the impact of digital storytelling math lessons on communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and attitudes towards mathematics among 8th-grade students. The following research problems were formulated:
<Research Problem 1> Is there a significant difference in the attitudes towards mathematics, communication skills, and problem-solving abilities between the class that received digital storytelling math lessons and the class that received traditional lecture-style math lessons among 8th-grade students?
<Research Problem 2> What is the influence of digital storytelling math lessons on communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and attitudes towards mathematics?
To address Research Problem 1, this study applied digital storytelling math lessons to the experimental group and traditional lecture-style math lessons to the control group for a duration of 8 sessions. pre-test and post-test were developed to assess communication skills and problem-solving abilities, along with the TIMSS 2019 Mathematics Attitude Survey, to quantitatively analyze the differences between the two groups in terms of communication skills, problem-solving abilities, interest, confidence, and value perception. Based on these quantitative research findings, a qualitative analysis was conducted on the post-class surveys and interviews to deeply understand the impact of digital storytelling math lessons on students' communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and attitudes towards mathematics. The research findings obtained through this research process are as follows.
Based on the quantitative analysis of the pre-test and post-test results for communication skills and problem-solving abilities, as well as the Mathematics Attitude Survey from TIMSS 2019, significant differences were found between the experimental and control groups in terms of communication skills, interest, and value perception. However, there was no significant difference observed in problem-solving abilities and confidence, with the experimental group showing slightly greater improvement compared to the control group. The qualitative analysis of student surveys and interview responses, based on these quantitative research findings, yielded the following results.
Through digital storytelling, students were able to understand mathematical expressions and naturally express them. They became more adept at articulating their thoughts in a detailed manner, allowing others to understand their ideas. Furthermore, they developed the ability to accept and incorporate the thoughts of others. The activities of creating storyboards, scripts, and producing videos using digital devices stimulated students' interest. Through engaging in these activities based on their own experiences, students recognized the practical utility of mathematics in real life. These qualitative research findings support the quantitative research results, indicating that digital storytelling math lessons had a significant impact on communication skills, interest, and value perception.
Additionally, the activities of problem-solving and video production, where students utilized learned concepts, appeared to help them explore problem-solving strategies and tackle real-life problems. However, some students found it challenging to stay focused on the lesson while interacting with their peers, as conversations deviated from the learning topic. They expressed that traditional lecture-style math lessons were more helpful in understanding the concepts. This supports the quantitative research findings that, although digital storytelling math lessons led to some improvement in students' problem-solving abilities, there was no significant difference compared to traditional lecture-style math lessons.
Moreover, engaging in digital storytelling allowed students to communicate using mathematical terminology that they wouldn't typically use, which helped them gain confidence in their ability to excel in mathematics. The process of creating problems and videos based on real-life situations also increased their confidence in applying mathematics to real-life scenarios. Additionally, comparing their work with others' activities boosted their self-confidence. However, for students who had prior supplementary learning in math academies, digital storytelling math lessons did not significantly contribute to improving their skills or boosting their confidence. Furthermore, introverted students faced difficulties participating in the activities, such as engaging in conversations with peers or modulating their voices during recordings. This process created psychological stress and did not positively impact their self-confidence. These findings support the quantitative research results, indicating that although digital storytelling math lessons led to a slight increase in students' confidence, there was no significant difference compared to traditional lecture-style math lessons.
Based on these findings, the conclusion of this study is that digital storytelling math lessons have a positive impact on communication skills, interest, and value perception. Communication skills are essential competencies in the 21st century, and enhancing them is of significant importance. Considering that the attitudes towards mathematics in the definitional domain in Korea rank relatively low, the improvement in interest and confidence is a meaningful result. Furthermore, in an era of rapid digital technological advancement, digital storytelling provides valuable insights into conducting lessons using digital devices, helping students adapt well to digital technology. This highlights the value of digital storytelling math lessons and its implications.
Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are suggested. Firstly, it is necessary to conduct research using assessment tools that enhance the validity of pre-test and post-test for communication skills and problem-solving abilities. Secondly, further research is needed to explore approaches that sustain students' interest in digital tool usage beyond temporary fascination. Thirdly, there is a need to study and implement strategies to overcome the limitations observed in digital storytelling activities and examine the positive effects that can be achieved. Fourthly, research is required to examine the effects of digital storytelling math lessons on different student groups based on their characteristics. Lastly, there is a need to develop teaching methods specifically for digital storytelling math lessons, enabling teachers to apply them more effectively in their classrooms.
While this study focused on the impact of digital storytelling math lessons on 8th-grade students, there are limitations to generalizing the research findings. However, through a mixed-methods approach, this study provided a multifaceted understanding of digital storytelling math lessons. Considering the fact that the 8th-grade students' level of definitional attitudes is ranked among the lowest according to international comparisons, it is meaningful to highlight that digital storytelling math lessons had a positive influence on students' interest and value perception. Therefore, it is hoped that this study can serve as valuable foundational material for the advancement of digital storytelling math lessons.2023-01-01T00:00:00Z성인에게 필요한 수학 소양 규준 개발 연구조은영https://dspace.ewha.ac.kr/handle/2015.oak/2644382023-02-24T16:31:13Z2023-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: 성인에게 필요한 수학 소양 규준 개발 연구

Abstract: Mathematics is a basic subject that drives social change, and the mathematical literacy required of adults has changed. Mathematical literacy is a concept that combines three aspects: mathematical knowledge, skills such as computation and reasoning, and mathematical attitude to recognize and apply mathematics to life.
In this study, mathematics education is not just provided throughout K-12 education, but should also be adapted according to the needs of each individual throughout his or her life. Thus, this mathematics education is defined as 'mathematics education from a lifelong educational perspective'. The following research questions were set up to conceptualize what mathematical literacy is required for adults, and to present the standard for applying it to the curriculum for adults.
1. What mathematical literacy do adults need?
1-1. What is the mathematical literacy required for adults that has been discussed in previous studies?
1-2. What mathematical literacy continuously appears throughout national curricula?
1-3. What mathematical literacy did adults appear to need, based on an analysis of their perceptions?
2. How is the standard of mathematical literacy, applied to curriculum for adults, to be constructed?
This study consists of three main stages. The first is the stage of first development research. We conceptualized the mathematical literacy required for adults through literature review, then we derived the first standard of mathematical literacy for adults. This first stage corresponds to research question 1-1. The second is the stage of second development research in which the results of research questions 1-2 and 1-3 would be synthesized and reflected in first standard. The last is the final stage of confirming the final draft, where experts reviewed the derived standard to secure the validity and reliability.
Research question 2 is about the procedure and results of forming the standard of mathematics literacy to be applied to a curriculum for adults. The procedure in which the three main stages of research are conducted and the results of each stage are the results of research question 2.
In the first developmental research stage, we examined what mathematical literacy consists of through literature review of mathematics education for adults and mathematical literacy. After analyzing and categorizing the factors of mathematical literacy, we derived the first standard of mathematical literacy for adults.
In the second developmental research stage, we reflected the results of curricula analysis and investigation on adults’ perception on the first standard, then derived the second standard. The curricula analysis study analyzed the mathematics curricula of elementary/middle/high schools/adults; it also identified which mathematical literacy appeared continuously in Korean mathematics curricula. The investigation about adults’ perception on math included analysis on several factors of mathematical literacy, affective characteristics of mathematical literacy of five math-related experts, and the same affective characteristics of five general persons.
In the last stage, the final standard was developed by modifying the second standard through four experts’ reviews. Two of the four reviewers have doctorate degrees and more than 10 years of experience in K-12 and adult education, one reviewer has a PhD and specialized in research related to this study, and the last reviewer also has a doctorate degree and has run an educational institution for over 30 years.
In summary, the mathematical literacy currently required for adults is to manage situations, solve problems, using communication, modeling, reasoning, and information processing skills in various problem situations, and positively value the role of mathematics in the real world.
The standard of mathematical literacy for adults consists of 3 domains: Mathematical activity, affective domain, and mathematical content. The first domain, mathematical activity, has 4 skills such as communication, modelling, reasoning, and information processing. Communication refers to the skill of interacting with oneself and others through language and mathematical expressions. Modelling is the skill to create and apply models in problem situations to find answers. Reasoning is being able to guess and analyze mathematical facts, justify the process, and reflect on the process and results. Information processing is the ability to collect, organize, analyze, utilize, and evaluate required information using appropriate tools. Mathematical process is applied to the mathematical activity domain, and the standard of this domain consists of standard 1, standard 2, and standard 3. Standard 1 corresponds to formulating, while standard 2 applies to employing, and standard 3 relates to interpreting and evaluating.
The second domain, the affective domain, deals with attitudes toward mathematics such as overcoming mathematical anxiety, judging the role and value of mathematics in the occupational and social context, and the use of mathematics in everyday life.
The final domain, mathematical content, presents seven sub-domains required by adults to efficiently manage or solve various problem situations: quantity and number, space and shape, change and relationship, uncertainty and prediction, mathematics and technology, mathematics and societal culture, and mathematical history.
In Korea, it is difficult to find research studies or policies on mathematics education for all adults. Due to this environment, this study has many points of significance. This study attempted to change the perception from a school-centered mathematics education to mathematics education from a lifelong educational perspective. It conceptualized mathematical literacy needed for adults, which was previously discussed only at a quantitative literacy level, appropriate for the present era. It presented the standard of mathematical literacy applicable throughout adults' life by reflecting various data. Moreover, the standard was developed in a form easy to link with school mathematics.
The results of this study are a standard of mathematics education for adults. Mathematical education from a lifelong educational perspective presented in this study can be used as a basic concept when designing 'mathematics education for all' at the policy level. The developed standard of mathematical literacy for adults can be used as a tool when developing mathematics curriculum or programs for adults. Furthermore, the standard can be used as an evaluation framework for evaluating mathematics programs for adults.
In conclusion, mathematics education should serve all people. Through the results of this study, we hope that the value of lifelong learning for mathematics is revealed, and that all citizens can access mathematics education according to their abilities and needs.;수학은 학교교육에 있어 근간을 이루는 기초과목으로서, 성인기 이후에도 수학 소양은 여전히 요구되지만, 사회변화에 따라 요구되는 수학 소양은 변화되어 왔다.
