;This study explored the ethical conflicts and coping experiences of low-career school counselors working in school counseling. School counselors play various and vital roles in providing support not only to underage students but also to parents and fellow teachers in various fields such as studies, family, friends, and psychological problems. However, these counseling activities require unique moral responsibility and values, often leading to ethical conflicts. Therefore, this study attempted to examine the ethical conflicts experienced in the school field of low-career counselors and how the essential meaning of coping with them was recognized through a phenomenological method.
According to the results of this study, low-career school counselors experience ethical conflicts and give the following meanings in the process of coping with them:
First, counselors experienced ethical conflicts related to professionalism due to the unique characteristics and responsibilities of school counseling. They experienced an ethical conflict between evaluation from fellow teachers and administrators and the principle of non-harm for clients in that they had no choice but to provide counseling beyond their capabilities. However, they eventually held on to their mission to help students, made efforts to improve their expertise, and emphasized the need for professional education and support to help them.
Ethical conflicts related to the confidentiality principle also occur very often among school counselors, and participants experienced confusion amid continuous demands from parents, fellow teachers, and managers to disclose counseling information, lack of education and guidelines related to confidentiality, and experienced trust damage and pain due to confidentiality leakage. However, as a result, participants were able to develop intuition and resistance to pain as counselors in the context of ethical conflicts related to confidentiality.
In addition, counselors experienced ethical conflicts due to multiple relationships that required them to perform both counselor and teacher roles simultaneously. Multiple relationships are strictly prohibited in general counseling because they can negatively affect the effectiveness of counseling. However, these multiple relationships are inevitable in the school counseling environment, so school counselors were required to have leadership skills to cope with ethical conflicts in multiple relationships, and they developed these abilities.
Next, the participants shared the experience of making courageous decisions in an ethical dilemma where the client's benefits and ethical principles collide and recognized this as a true ethical dilemma. They experienced pain and confusion amid this conflict between customary and situational ethics. However, in the process, they developed the courage to choose the client's benefits over the counselor's safety. They emphasized the need for ethics education and argued that they should practice ethical choices and improve their ability to cope with ethical dilemmas.
As such, through experience, participants understood that ethical conflicts were inevitable for school counselors and accepted them as a process of self-maturity and professional improvement. This acceptance has shown that ethical development moves toward following internal principles, exerting courage even in ethical conflict situations, and contributing to building its ethical philosophy.
This study is the first to explore the ethical conflicts and coping experiences of low-career school counselors in depth through phenomenological research. It is expected to help reveal their difficulties and provide practical support. In addition, it is significant in that it suggested a change in perspective that can look at the ethical conflict of school counselors as an opportunity for growth.2024-01-01T00:00:00Z전문상담교사가 인식하는 정책대상집단의 사회적 구성 분석 및 정책 개선 연구이은정https://dspace.ewha.ac.kr/handle/2015.oak/2673252024-02-14T02:51:15Z2024-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: 전문상담교사가 인식하는 정책대상집단의 사회적 구성 분석 및 정책 개선 연구

South Korea's school counseling policy started in 1964 with the implementation of the qualification system for disciplinary guidance teachers.'Disciplinary guidance teachers’ were assigned starting in 1973, and the name of the role evolved into ‘career counseling teachers’ in 1990, then continuing the lineage, ‘professional school counseling teachers’ in 1998. The “Act on the Prevention of and Countermeasures Against Violence in Schools” was enacted on January 29th, 2004, with Article 12-1 stipulating that counseling offices were to be established in schools. Furthermore, with the Article 19-2 of the “Elementary and Secondary Education Act” stipulating that professional school counseling teachers should be assigned, the professional school counseling teachers system we have today was established. On September 1st, 2005, professional school counseling teachers were assigned for the first time to perform only counseling duties without teaching duties. Today, 18 years after the first professional school counseling teachers were assigned, this paper aims to answer questions about where and what kind of work professional school counseling teachers perform and how they apply school counseling policies as field practitioners. There is sufficient literature on the boundaries of counseling-specific tasks recognized by professional school counseling teachers under the professional school counseling teachers system, as can be seen in studies on confusion due to unclear task boundaries, burnout of counselors, and conflicts on roles and responsibilities. However, not many studies empirically analyze the scope and level of counseling-specific tasks recognized by professional school counseling teachers. In addition, it is difficult to analyze the school counseling policy in the policy design process from the perspective of professional school counseling teachers due to various constraints. Therefore, this study aims to confirm the scope and level of counseling-specific work as perceived by professional school counseling teachers, through a survey targeting incumbent counselors. Furthermore, this paper reveals the types of groups perceived by professional school counseling teachers based on Ingram and Schneider's Social Construction of Target Population (SCTP) model. The author aims to look at the present and future direction of school counseling policy from the perspective of professional school counseling teachers.
The main results of this study are summarized in the following.
First, Professional school counseling teachers perceived there to be a total of 3 types of social constructions in school counseling policy – the advantaged, the contenders, and the dependents based on the Social Construction of Target Population(SCTP) of Ingram and Schneider. School administrators and civic groups (e.g., The Foundation for Preventing Youth Violence, School Violence Victims Families Council, etc.) appeared to be the advantaged, and the Presidential Office, the Ministry of Education, the National Assembly, the Office of Education, and research groups (e.g., Korean Educational Development Institute, etc.) appeared to be contenders. Parents, external counseling agencies, professional counselors at public institutions, teachers, students, and professional school counseling teachers appeared to be dependents. The deviants were not identified in this case. Professional school counseling teachers recognized civic organizations and school administrators (e.g., principals, vice principals) as a group that has a positive social image and strong political power (powerful and positively constructed). In other words, it was perceived that school counseling policy is designed in a way that is advantageous to civic groups and school administrators and that they can reap the benefits. The dependents are powerless but are positively constructed. Professional school counseling teachers recognized students, parents, and teachers, who are the direct subjects of school counseling, as dependents. They felt that school counseling policies were being designed and changed without the input of the dependents. This suggests that there is a lack of communication with professional school counseling teachers and teachers who actually carry out the work of school counseling in schools. In addition, it was found that professional school counseling teachers are still experiencing the same issues that were prevalent during the early days of professional school counseling.
Second, in the survey on the scope of counseling-specific work, professional school counseling teachers perceived counseling activities that directly demonstrate counseling expertise or work related to the operation of counseling rooms to be very close to counseling-specific work. On the other hand, the work that any teacher can do was recognized as a task that is not close to counseling-specific work. Through this, it was confirmed that there was a gap between the professional school counseling teachers' aspirations to demonstrate their professional capabilities and the reality in schools. Furthermore, counselors felt that performing non-counseling work led to reduced counseling-specific work hours, a significant impact on burnout levels, and increased overtime work hours, but increased overall work capacity and a stronger cooperation with other teachers. Although professional school counseling teachers that perceived their institution as being conservative felt that counseling-specific work hours decreased and overtime hours increased, professional school counseling teachers overall said they observed an increase in overall work capacity and an increase in the cooperation between teachers. professional school counseling teachers that perceived people in their organization to be conservative said that non-counseling work rather than counseling-specific tasks had an impact on burnout.
Third, this study finds that professional school counseling teachers felt no actions were taken in the direction of improvement in the school counseling policy change process. They also expressed concerns about participating in policies regarding the work and role of professional counselors. Also, it was found that they felt psychological and emotional stress due to the fact that the school counseling policy was not creating change. Professional school counseling teachers felt that their expertise was not being recognized and that their school was forcing them to teach classes. Therefore, professional school counseling teachers were found to be aware of the need for institutional change or improvement in school counseling policies. In particular, in order for school counseling policies to take root, professional school counseling teachers felt that South Korea needs to enact related laws, expand counseling facilities for expert counseling, prohibit issuance of Grade I specialized counseling qualifications for teachers of other subjects who have no counseling experience, dispatch incumbent professional school counseling teachers to the Wee Project Research Center, upgrade the qualifications of professional school counseling teachers to regular teachers, and establishing a specialized counseling department in schools.
Therefore, with the results of this study, the author suggests the following matters to consider in order to execute an effective and efficient school counseling policy in the future.
First, it is necessary to set a job scope standard for in-school counseling. The scope of counseling that can be done by any teacher, homeroom teachers, or professional school counseling teachers must be clarified. Professional school counseling teachers can plan and operate specialized education programs that teachers cannot, and provide expert material where needed. Moreover, the establishment of specific counseling duties allows for the customization of counseling spaces in schools, such as incorporating unique features like play therapy rooms or utilizing media for counseling purposes.
Second, a new supervision method in the form of a case study needs to be established, as it is difficult for professional school counseling teachers to supervise students in class. The quality of school counseling can be enhanced through consultation on the counseling process for new professional school counseling teachers, including psychological evaluation, establishing counseling goals, and using counseling techniques for clients. Additionally, it will be possible to create an environment in which the professionalism of school counseling in the educational field is improved by addressing the limitations of self-funded supervision.
Third, it is necessary to institutionalize ethical standards which are critical in school counseling policies through a school counseling act. The fact that professional school counseling teachers handle areas of psychotherapy and psychological evaluation is enough grounds to legislate counseling ethics of professional school counseling teachers. These ethics must be maintained to protect not only counselees but also counselors, and a school counseling act (bill) must be the foundation for clarifying these ethics. In addition, considering the modern school scene where the roles of life guidance, counseling, and psychotherapy are simultaneously required, the level of school counseling needs to be subdivided within the framework of the law so that homeroom teachers, professional school counseling teachers, and external counseling experts can provide timely counseling.
Fourth, the professional school counseling teacher qualification system must be operated for its intended purpose of training teachers to have professional knowledge in school counseling. In particular, Professional school counseling teachers must be able to demonstrate their expertise required for the issuance of a Grade 1 professional school counseling teacher qualification. Grade 1 qualifications for school health teacher, school nutrition teacher, and school librarian teacher are only issued to teachers with at least 3 years of relevant work experience. Under the current law, a Grade 1 professional school counseling teacher qualification can be issued to those with just 3 years of teaching experience even if they have no experience in school counseling. This produces Grade 1 qualified professional school counseling teacher with no field experience in specialized counseling, which may be a factor in lowering the quality of school counseling.
The policy suggestions in this study should be considered as important factors in establishing and activating school counseling policies.2024-01-01T00:00:00Z사립대학 재정요인에 따른 대학성과의 잠재프로파일 분류 및 잠재전이 분석이안나https://dspace.ewha.ac.kr/handle/2015.oak/2673242024-02-14T02:51:15Z2024-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: 사립대학 재정요인에 따른 대학성과의 잠재프로파일 분류 및 잠재전이 분석

The current state of higher education in South Korea has rapidly expanded quantitatively, surpassing the popularization stage and reaching the universalization stage. Recently, issues such as increased investment in higher education, tuition hikes, and national scholarship policies have become social concerns, leading to a heightened interest in higher education. While the quantitative growth of higher education has laid the groundwork for its development, internal and external changes, including the spread of beneficiaries due to the popularization of higher education, a decrease in the student population leading to a sharp decline in admissions resources, a 15-year freeze on tuition fees, and the gradual elimination of entrance fees, pose challenges to universities. These challenges are adversely affecting the financial conditions of universities, resulting in a decline in the quality of higher education and consequently undermining national competitiveness.
In particular, the structure of higher education in South Korea is dominated by private universities, accounting for more than 80%. The anticipated deterioration of the quality of higher education due to the financial difficulties of private universities seems inevitable. University finances are a crucial factor in enhancing university performance, and if universities lack adequate finances, it becomes challenging to maintain favorable educational conditions and ultimately ensure university performance. This study focuses on comprehensively examining the relationship between university performance and financial factors in private universities, which has been a significant topic in the field of higher education.
To achieve this aim, this study used data from the education statistics by the Korean Educational Development Institute and from university information disclosure. The indicators of university performance included employment rates, dropout rates, student enrollment rates, domestic research output per full-time faculty, and international research output per full-time faculty. The financial factors influencing university performance were categorized into expenditure and income variables, such as per-student educational expenses, per-student material purchase expenses, per-full-time faculty research expenses, per-student financial support, per-student government subsidies, per-student corporate deposits, per-student reserves, per-student donations income, and per-student industry-academic cooperation and school-enterprise transfer income.
To classify latent profiles of university performance and explore the financial factors influencing them, Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was employed. Additionally, Latent Transition Analysis (LTA) was conducted to examine the transitional patterns of the classified profile types over time. The analysis covered the entire period from 2015 to 2021, with actual analyses conducted at three points: 2015, 2018, and 2021. To observe the transition process of the classification types over time, two LTA analyses were performed: from 2015 to 2018 and from 2018 to 2021.
The major findings derived from the analysis are as follows.
Frist, at each time point in 2015, 2018, and 2021, latent profile analysis of university performance revealed three profiles. In all three time points, the profiles were categorized as underperforming group (4.8%, 8.8%, 16.8%), average performance group (74.4%, 75.2%, 68.8%), and excellent performance group (20.8%, 16.0%, 14.4%). Combining the results of latent profile classification for university performance at each time point, the proportion of the average performance group was consistently the highest. Over time, there was a gradual increase in the proportion of the underperforming group, while the proportion of the excellent performance group showed a relatively decreasing trend.
Second, the financial factors influencing the classification of latent profiles at each time point in 2015, 2018, and 2021 were analyzed. In 2015, factors such as per-student educational expenses, per-full-time faculty research expenses, per-student financial support, per-student reserves, and per-student industry-academic cooperation and school-enterprise transfer income were identified as factors that increased the probability of belonging to the excellent performance group. In 2018, significant influences were observed from per-student educational expenses, per-student material purchase expenses, per-full-time faculty research expenses, per-student financial support, per-student reserves. In 2021, factors such as per-full-time faculty research expenses, per-student government subsidies, per-student reserves, per-student donations income, and per-student industry-academic cooperation and school-enterprise transfer income were identified as influential factors increasing the probability of belonging to the excellent performance group.
Third, latent transition analysis of patterns between classification types of university performance at each time point in 2015, 2018, and 2021 revealed a common trend of the highest probability of transitioning to the group with the same performance level. Examining the major characteristics of transition patterns at each time point, from 2015 to 2018, there was a 92.5% probability of transitioning from the average performance group to the average performance group. From 2018 to 2021, there was a 97.3% probability of transitioning from the excellent performance group to the excellent performance group. Commonly, across all time points, the probability of transitioning to a group with the same performance level was the highest. Notably, for both the underperforming and average performance groups, the probability of transitioning to the excellent performance group was 0% in all time points, indicating a strengthening trend of maintaining the excellent performance group over time. Additionally, for the underperforming group, although there were some cases of upward transitions to the average performance group, the probability of upward transition significantly decreased over time. Conversely, for the average performance group, the probability of downward transition to the underperforming group increased over time.
Based on these findings, the following policy suggestions were derived.
Frist, overall improvement in government financial support and tuition policies is necessary. Despite the continuous expansion of financial support to private universities through programs like national scholarships and financial support projects, disparities in financial conditions among universities are deepening. While efforts by universities to secure additional funds are crucial, there is a need for the government to reconsider policies that increase the financial burden on universities and engage in ongoing discussions to enhance financial support programs.
Second, customized performance evaluation policies for each university should be established. To elevate the overall performance of higher education, it is essential to develop strategic approaches based on the unique challenges of each university, rather than focusing on external evaluations or enhancing university images. Bold financial investments and rigorous performance management are prerequisites. Universities must strive to secure adequate funding, create excellent educational environments customized to their characteristics, and, consequently, enhance university performance.
Third, policy support is required to ensure the professionalism of university financial operations. For long-term improvement in the quality of higher education, a stable funding structure for university finances must be established. Universities need to restructure inefficient expenditures, generate diverse income sources, and ensure stable financial restructuring. In addition, policy support is necessary for programs that train professionals and allocate budgets related to such initiatives.
Fourth, selective improvement policies and the development of optimal performance management models are necessary. In a competitive structure where groups are solidified based on university performance, it is crucial to periodically examine performance indicators for universities with relatively poor performance and formulate selective improvement policies. Benchmarking cases where performance has improved and developing optimal performance management models will contribute to individualized university development. Furthermore, policy support is needed to establish autonomous consortia or collaborative bodies among universities to build mutually beneficial relationships for improving university performance.2024-01-01T00:00:00Z외국인 유학생의 대학생활적응에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구김에스더https://dspace.ewha.ac.kr/handle/2015.oak/2673232024-02-14T02:51:15Z2024-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: 외국인 유학생의 대학생활적응에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구

Abstract: This study examines the current status of university adaptation among Korean students and international students studying at A University in Korea. It aims to explore and understand the factors influencing university adaptation and contribute to assisting the adaptation of international students by doing so. With the quantitative increase in international students, there is a growing emphasis on quality management. The government has implemented the 'International Education Quality Assurance System (IEQAS)' for attracting and managing international students. While the number of international students continues to rise, research on their university adaptation is limited to students from certain countries such as China, Mongolia, Vietnam, and there is a relative scarcity of studies involving students from diverse nations. Therefore, this study was initiated to address this gap. Additionally, the research seeks to contribute to providing a high-quality study environment for the consistently increasing number of international students, encouraging more high-quality international students to choose South Korea as their study destination.
The purpose of this study is to explore and analyze the factors influencing the university adaptation of international students and to expand support for enhancing their adaptation to university life. The main research question is, "What are the factors influencing the university adaptation of international students at A University?" To achieve this, the study aims to examine the overall level of university adaptation among both Korean and international students at A University. Additionally, it seeks to explore the impact of educational variables that contribute to the adaptation of international students and aid in understanding the factors affecting their adaptation to university life. The specific research questions for achieving the research objectives are as follows.
1. In comparison to Korean students, is there a difference in university adaptation between international students and Korean students?
1-1. Are there differences in university adaptation based on individual characteristics?
1-2. Are there differences in university adaptation based on university environmental factors?
2. In comparison to Korean students, what factors influence the university adaptation of international students?
2-1. What factors influence academic adaptation?
2-2. What factors influence social adaptation?
2-3. What factors influence emotional adaptation?
2-4. What factors influence physical adaptation?
2-5. What factors influence attachment to university life?
To achieve the research objectives, Mixed Methods Research approach, combining quantitative and qualitative research, was employed. Specifically, a Convergent Design was utilized within the framework of mixed methods research. The study participants were undergraduate students at A University located in Gyeongsangbuk-do. For the quantitative research component, data from a school life survey conducted during the 2023-1 academic semester were used. The survey was administered to all undergraduate students, and a total of 978 respondents (897 Korean students, 81 international students) provided analyzable responses related to university adaptation. For the qualitative research component, in-depth interview data from seven individual interviews were utilized.
To analyze the results of the quantitative research:
First, frequency analysis and descriptive statistical analysis were conducted to understand the levels of individual characteristics and university environmental factors among the study participants.
Second, reliability analysis and factor analysis were performed to confirm the reliability and validity of the University Life Adaptation Scale.
Third, independent sample t-tests, Wilcoxon rank-sum tests, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were conducted to verify differences in university adaptation based on individual characteristics and university environmental factors. This aimed to explore group differences based on mean sizes.
Fourth, Pearson correlation coefficients were examined to understand the relationships between individual characteristics, university environmental factors, and university adaptation.
Fifth, Hierarchical Regression Analysis was conducted to analyze the factors influencing university adaptation based on individual characteristics and university environmental factors.
Qualitative research results were analyzed by coding to systematically understand rich textual data. Open coding was used to analyze in-depth interview data sentence by sentence. By closely examining the in-depth interview data, key themes and patterns were identified, allowing for a structured interpretation of the data. Similar experiences among participants in the in-depth interviews were coded. During interviews with students, consent was obtained, and data were collected through simultaneous recording with a recorder and note-taking. Subsequently, transcription work was carried out, and if the content was in English, it was translated into Korean for organization. Open coding was applied to derive key terms from the interview data, which were then categorized into "themes" and "sub-themes." Extracts from in-depth interview data were selected based on themes, and categorized content was systematically organized. Through data integration and result interpretation, the research problem was addressed, leading to the following conclusions.
First, both international and Korean students at A University showed difficulties in university adaptation at a moderate level, with no significant differences based on nationality. Variables such as 'gender,' 'sense of purpose,' 'degree of economic difficulty,' and 'suicidal ideation' were identified as meaningful factors for international students. Additionally, the quantitative research results did not highlight the factor of 'administrative support' as a major influence, but the qualitative research suggested a need for assistance in this regard.
Second, students at A University exhibited a high level of attachment to the school, but they experienced difficulties in physical adaptation. Both international and Korean students did not face significant language issues in university adaptation, as courses were offered in Korean or English. They received adequate social support from professors, administrative staff, and friends. The main challenges in university adaptation were related to time management difficulties, especially due to frequent nighttime activities, resulting in attendance problems during class hours. Students with clear learning or personal goals prioritizing academics maintained high grades and set additional goals.
Based on these research findings, implications for improving the university adaptation of international students include the need for adaptation programs tailored to female students with lower adaptation levels compared to male students. Support for enhancing learning motivation should be provided to enable students to set clear academic goals. Additionally, considering the diverse economic circumstances of individual students, various scholarship programs should be established to enable students to continue their studies, and these programs should be provided until graduation. For stress-vulnerable students, the development of stress coping programs and the implementation of emotional support programs are essential.;본 연구는 국내 A대학에 재학 중인 한국인 학생과 외국인 유학생의 대학생활적응 현황을 살펴보고, 대학생활적응을 해나감에 있어 영향을 미치는 요인을 탐색하고 이해하여 외국인 유학생의 대학생활적응에 도움을 주는 데 있다.
