Title: The Effects of Auricular Therapy in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Ewha Authors: 박효정
Abstract: Purpose: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine the effects of auricular therapy on alleviating indicators of disease status in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases using relevant search terms. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for randomized controlled trials and the Risk of Bias tool for non-randomized studies of interventions. Results: Ten studies were included for the systematic review. Most of the studies were conducted in Asia, and randomized controlled trials were primarily chosen as the study design. The auricular therapy points most commonly used were related to the pancreas, which is associated with diabetes. A meta-analysis using a random-effects model to analyze glycated hemoglobin showed a Hedges' g value of -0.11 (95% CI: -0.53 to 0.32, p=.623), which was not statistically significant. However, the standardized mean difference for fasting blood sugar was -0.97 (95% CI=-1.22 to -0.72, p<.001), indicating a large and statistically significant effect size. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that auricular therapy may have an impact on fasting blood sugar levels. However, the studies used in this analysis were limited and some publication bias was identified, requiring further research to determine the broader implications and effectiveness of auricular therapy © 2023 Korean Academy of Fundamentals of Nursing.

Title: An analysis of the educational needs priorities for clinical nurse educators: Utilizing the Borich needs assessment and the locus for focus model; [임상간호교육자의 교육요구도 우선순위 분석: Borich 요구도와 locus for focus model 활용]
Ewha Authors: 신수진
Abstract: Purpose: This study used a descriptive investigative design to compare the educational needs and priorities of education-dedicated nurses and preceptors regarding clinical nurse educator competency. Methods: A survey was conducted from March to April 2023 with 308 participants, including 140 education-dedicated nurses and 168 preceptors. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired t-test with the IBM SPSS 26.0 program. For the purpose of analyzing educational needs, we further analyzed data through the Borich needs assessment and the locus for focus model. Results: Among the clinical nurse educator competency, both education-dedicated nurses and preceptors identified “new theory and practice” as the highest priority educational need. Additionally, education-dedicated nurses prioritized “teaching design ability,” “teaching evaluation ability,” and “evidence-based nursing/practice and research,” while preceptors prioritized “clinical nursing knowledge” and “professional development ability” as their educational needs. Conclusion: While both education-dedicated nurses and preceptors responded that education is necessary for all the competency areas required of clinical nurse educators, variations were observed in their reported educational needs and priorities. Thus, it is imperative to develop and implement a differentiated education program for enhancing the competency of clinical nurse educators that considers the distinct requirements of education-dedicated nurses and preceptors. © 2023 The Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education.

Title: The impacts of nurses’ attitudes towards dementia, critical reflection competency, and nursing work environment on person-centered nursing in acute care hospitals: A descriptive study
Ewha Authors: 신수진
Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of the study was to examine the attitudes of acute care nurses towards dementia, their critical reflection competency, and the level of nursing work environment and to identify the factors relating to person-centered nursing. Methods: The study was conducted for 149 nurses with at least 1 year of experience working in acute care hospitals and providing nursing care to hospitalized elderly patients. The measurements used were the Dementia Attitude Scale Korean version, the Critical Ref lection Competency Scale, the Nursing Work Environment Scale, and the Person-Centered Nursing Assessment Tool. The collected data were analyzed with frequency analysis, descriptive sta-tistics, independent t-test, ANOVA test, Pearson’s correlation, and multiple regression using IBM SPSS 29.0 software. Results: The factors influencing person-centered nursing performance were critical reflection competency (β=.49, p<.001), attitudes towards dementia (β=.29, p<.001), and clinical career (β=-.26, p=.024), having the explanation power of 59.6%. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that critical reflection competency, attitudes towards dementia, and clinical career have an impact on person-centered nursing performance. Specifically, higher levels of critical reflection competency and positive attitudes towards dementia were predictors with higher levels of person-centered nursing performance. Therefore, to enhance person-centered nursing performance among acute care nurses, it is important to prioritize critical reflection training programs for experienced nurses to enhance their critical reflection competency. © 2023 Korean Gerontological Nursing Society.

Title: Factors Affecting COVID-19 Incidences and Deaths of Geriatric Hospital Patients in Korea
Ewha Authors: 정선옥
Abstract: The current retrospective study aimed to investigate the association between organizational factors and nursing staff in geriatric hospitals and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) incidences and deaths using secondary data from governments nationwide in Korea. We used data on the number of COVID-19– confirmed cases and deaths among older adults in geriatric hospitals and nursing staff levels in those hospitals. We found that when the RN level was higher than the sample mean, the number of COVID-19– confirmed cases by geriatric hospital was significantly lower (4.3%; p = 0.05) and the number of deaths by geriatric hospital was marginally significantly lower (1.4%; p = 0.05). This study presented the national description of geriatric hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of organizational and nursing staff factors. Findings highlight the impact of nursing staff skill mix and number of geriatric hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic in Korea. It is necessary to allocate a realistic designation of infection control staff and establish a clear standard so infection control activities in geriatric hospitals can proceed systematically.
