tTŐYP P!YMastertxMaster's ThesisThe purpose of the study is to improve the curriculum and education contents of pre-service mathematics teacher by analyzing the concept definition and concept image characteristics of convergence of sequence of pre-service mathematics teachers and to analyze the characteristics of the MKT sub-area.
The research questions are as follows:
1. What are the characteristics of the concept definition and the SMK of the pre-service mathematics teachers about convergence of sequence?
2. What are the characteristics of the PCK of the pre-service mathematics teachers about convergence of sequence?
In order to solve the research questions, the questionnaire was produced based on the previous studies, and 30 pre-service math teachers participated in the survey. Also, interviews were conducted for five pre-service teachers.
As a result of the study, only 43.3% of the pre-service math teachers accurately described the intuitive definition of convergence of sequence, while 90% of the formal definition was described accurately. In addition, in order to teach the convergence of the sequence, most of the pre-service math teachers explained it by using graphs and examples. Moreover, pre-service math teachers mentioned the concept and definition of convergence, which must be remembered after learning the sequence, and pointed out the ambiguity of the intuitive definition as the cause of student s misconception. They were aware of the importance of the concept of convergence of sequence and the limitations of intuitive definition. However, 76.7% said they would still teach the intuitive definition because of the difficulty of its formal definition for students.
These results show that pre-service math teachers recognized the limits of intuitive definition with attempts to guide it through intuitive definitions. However, some of the pre-service math teachers responded that by guiding the convergence of the sequence with formal definitions, it would reduce student s misconception and expand of student s thinking.
Based on these findings, this study suggested a plan to guide the convergence of sequence with the formal definitions.
